I have always had to undercoat red or yellow with white before painting either of those colors over dark blue. So I have to paint the piping or whatever twice, once in white and then again in either yellow or red. If I left the white undercoat step out, the red and yellow didn't look vivid enough. Does anyone know of any brand(s)of red and yellow paints that will really cover dark blue in one coat without painting under it in white first? I don't care if is acrylic or an oil based paint. Thanks for any help. Tom |

Does anyone know of any brand(s)of red and yellow paints that will really cover dark blue in one coat without painting under it in white first? No. All paint is translucent to a lesser or greater extent. Red and yellow more than most. |

I have not tried it myself but the CelVinyl brands get raves for the coverage of their reds and blues. link |

Cell Vinyl for Cartoon Color. Been using it for over 10 years now. Covers black undercoat in one coat. The best reds and yellows I have found. link |

I've long preferred enamal paints, but even with those yellow needs a white undercoat. And very sadly this past year, the Model Master's Enamel paints have been crap. Very thick and goopy, and a thin finish. Grr. I think the EPA must have banned anoher key ingredient. May be time for me to give these cel vinyls a try. |

I haven't tried Cell Vinyl. But in my experience otherwise, you are already doing the best thing using a white in dercoat of the areas in question. You'll get a great result in only two coats that way (white, then red/yellow) versus a poor result even after many coats of red or yellow by itself. |

Tried it with various brands, always wind up undercoating white/light grey first |

Try painting the red/yellow part first then carefully fill in the dark blue. |

I'll second the cell vinyl paints, amazing white, grays & black, the coverage is great! |

do we find Cell Vinil paints in France, or elsewhere in Europe? |

No. I undercoat yellow with a yellow/brown or ochre and red with a dull red so the brighter yellow or red is then more of a highlight. If I used white I know I would miss a bit, especially on something thin like piping. |

I am currently painting Oxfords Horse for my Williamite army, not having a problem using Vallejo red over blue. Never yet found a yellow that covers well. I often add some Plaka ochre to a yellow mix and that gives it a bit more body and coverage, but at the expense of brightness, so it needs highlighting with pure yellow. |

AUXILIAPAL: Cartooncolour is out of California and I know their overseas shipping is expensive if you use the shopping cart. I suggest emailing or calling them to see if they can ship for a more reasonable cost. They are friendly and helpful people from my dealings with them. |

Thanks to all of you. So many responses, so soon. @Jim Duncan, Thanks, that is a good suggestion which I often do. When painting French Napoleonic line infantry who have white lapels piped red, I paint the white lapels at the same time I do the breeches. Then I paint the red piping on the lapels. I only need to be neat with one side of the red, that against the white. The other side can be messy. I then add the blue around it. But sometimes painting the piping first, particularly against any color other than white doesn't seem to work for me. Like red or yellow piping on the back of Union Civil War artillery or cavalry shell jackets. @ Mark, Evil Bob, and abelp01, thanks very much for the suggestion. I placed my order just now. Tom |

The better Reds/Yellows are the Cadmium colors (IMHO). I think Vallejo stopped making Cadmium Red/Cadmium Yellow; and Liquitex discontinued their "Soft Body" Cadmium colors; but a few fine art paint manufacturers still make them. Note: avoid the "Hues", which are lesser pigments mixed to simulate the Cadmium colors, but aren't as rich or as opaque. Golden still makes true Cadmium colors (in the Heavy Body). |
