Personally, I don't usually bother, but I have this idea for flags which will save you lots of time and money in the long run.

For 15mm you'll need 1/16" tubing and, probably 1/32" wire.
When I want historic commander markers I use card name plates, with potratit where possible, because it's much quicker and easier.
It's worth the effort, especially for mercenary pike. Here are some Landsknechts (in the distance) fighting for the French. To have them for others i just change the flags.
Same thing for gendarmes – all of mine have changeable flags. In the background is a unit of TAG Italian pike doubling as French – you know they are French not Italians because they've got French flags.
BTW. IMHO 1503 to 1522 is a better time frame to aim at. Much more diversity and the troops will stretch to 1525 anyway. After the sack of Rome in 1527 the wars were just a series of sieges and skirmishes with just one big battle of note.
Good luck with your project – it is just about the most colourful and fanciful historic period there is, and it looks great.
