Wasn't Aaron Burr accused of plotting to hive off part of Louisiana as a separate nation? Of course, he was fitted-up by Jemmy Wilkinson.

Several of the original explorers of what is now Ohio and Kentucky, claimed/bought Indian land and attempted to create their own independent nations. Simon Kenton was one.
There were several others. I would have to go back and check sources, but I recall at least two other attempts.
Once the local neighboring States found out about the plans they simply adsorbed them and made the new "counties".

I have to agree with Texas Jack being as I was one of those who got DHed. If you ask a politically charged question you're going to get politically charged answers.
