Well let's raise a glass or two to Henry Ireton, Oliver Cromwell and the rest who showed us how we should treat the monarchy on this day in 1649 Cheers Ian |

3 September is my favorite Cromwell day |

Actually that occurred on January 30 (tomorrow) rather than on January 29. At least Charles is reported to have asked for an extra shirt so his possible shivering from the cold wouldn't be interpreted as fear. Of course, when you posted this it may have been tomorrow already in the UK. Jim |

22nd Foot – "the humourless bunch of religious extremists whose entirely unconstitutional kangaroo court convicted Charles" Nice to see you believe the propaganda, next you'll be saying that the Dutch did not invade and put their leader on the throne in 1688 It is 10:15am 30th January here in NZ Col Campbell Cheers Ian |

Oh, I was going by the location in your profile "United Kingdom, England, Greater London." I stand corrected, good sir. Jim |

I was surprised on my recent trip to London to see the large statue of Oliver on the grounds of the Houses of Parliament. |
steamingdave47 | 29 Jan 2016 3:01 p.m. PST |
@vtsaogames Why surprised? Cromwell was a military genius and helped to lay to rest the doctrine of "Divine Right of Kings", paving the way for modern democracy. |

Well, Sandinista, I guess you can say the gentleman got leveled. |

Steamingdave, I rather like some aspects of Cromwell. But with all the royal this and the royal that in London, I was surprised to see a big statue of the regicide right in the middle of London. My own take on monarchy: I see a crowned head, I wonder where the guillotine is. More about Cromwell: the checks and balances of the US Constitution are largely designed to stop another Cromwell from railroading legislation through. His name is nowhere mentioned but his shadow looms over all. |

I was surprised to see a big statue of the regicide right in the middle of London. It's location is significant – the grounds of the Palace of Westminster, aka the Houses of Parliament. Just round the corner from it is the equally big staue of Richard the Lionheart … |

He brought and end to monarchy? Yet, at his death he bequeathed the role of Head of State to his son………. Sounds like a monarch to me. |

Oliver Cromwell like him or loath him he was no friend of democracy, No elections under the Protectorate and he ran the nation through his Major Generals and the force of New Model Army. |

OK so that's Cromwell but Henry Ireton was a good sort of chap. |
