Happy to report a bunch of friends and I plan to play this, "What-If?" scenario for the first time this coming Saturday.

Instead of accepting an Afghan gaurantee of safe-conduct for the 90 mile trek to the border of British India, the British and Indian troops will try to fight their way from their camp to the Bala Hissar, less than two miles away (about 7' in scale terms).

I don't yet have any c.1840 British or Indian troops painted, based, and ready to play, so we'll be substituting c.1880 Second Afghan War Brits and Indians for their missing First Afghan War predecessors.

Here's a LINK to my blog post, which includes briefings for the Afghan and British players, army-lists, scenario scecific TSATF rule adjustments…

…and views from all four sides of the tabletop, which I'm posting here as well:

That all looks splendid did you make your own buildings and walls?

Incredible layout. As good as Guru's table shots look in the photos, they are even better in person. I'm lucky enough to be one of those joining Guru for the big dust-up on Saturday. The anticipation is painful!

And if is as good as the two that he has brought to Colonial Barracks convention, then it will definitely be an experience to play a game with it. MG is a fantastic terrain modeller.

@Oh B#gger: I made the terrain boards, rocky hills, the roads, and a handful of the less-impressive buildings, but all the really nice buildings were built by the incredibly-talented Chris Riordan of Ontario, Canada, aka: Chris The Model Maker -- and thank you for the compliment!

@Daryl: looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, my friend, and finally playing as your comrade instead of your enemy!

@ColCampbell: Thank you, Jim, you are too kind!

Another Awesome layout! I checked your blog and the scenario specs sound great.

How true Daryl, The pics really do look awesome, but…as you know they don't do the table justice. We know it truly looks even better in person. You lucky dog, enjoy the game and report back to HQ with more pics!

Thank you for the inspiration MG. You keep setting the bar and drive us to better our own tables.

Cheers,
JB

Fabulous as always MG!
The key phrase I picked up there is "I don't YET have any c1840 British or Indian troops"! Is there a new collection planed?

Thanks for the kind words, Mark! I have the raw material for the 44th Regt, but have only done head-swap conversions on 4 of them, so still a ways to go. I also have some Sikh Wars Indian infantry and Bengal Horse Artillery, but need to find some c.1840 Indian cavalry, as unless I missed something the old Wargames Foundry Sikh Wars range seems to have only British cavalry.

When I get these figures painted, I think I'll base them with snowy terrain, but it may be a while…

MG – I wonder if the new Iron Duke range might have something in the pipeline for you, Indian cavalry-wise? I really look forward to seeing you new force take shape, and of course the Afghan wars have the advantage that you can deploy all your existing tribesmen!

Yes, exactly, EC! That was the thing that pushed me over the top to attempt this First Afghan War game, the fact that I only need to raise one side, and can use my pre-existing Afghan/Pathan army for the other side.
