So the story is one of your relatives opens up a door to the dark places and a cuhthullu thing makes havock, You are lucky to get his estate with daemons and all.

You have to rebuild the estate hire mercenaries to go into the dark places, recover lost family valubales, as well as gold and other things.

It's a dark unforgiving game.

Besides health you have stress, there more stress they nastier things get. at 100 they start to loose their sanity. at 200 they die of a heart attack….

Lots of things can cause your "heroes" too get stress, like getting a nasty crit against them. As one starts to loose stanity, they will say stuff they will make the rest of your groups to do so too.

As you upgrade your estate you can upgrade heroes, weapons.

Alot of money will be spent on upgrading the abby and tavern, thats where you have to put your heroes to make them loose stress.

On top of this, heroes will get quirks some are somewhat positive others not so much.

I had one hero, a healer lady, she is a gambling adict. meaning she can no loose stress by drinking at the bar, hanging out at the brothel or staying at the abby.
BUT she is also a known cheater and so not allowed to gamble at the tavern, in other words I can't make her loose stress. she was my best helaer, but for sevral missions she had to stay home, as she had like 120 stress and would die of a heart attack pretty fast.

Finnaly I had the cash to get her into the sanatorium, for money you can remove her negative quirks.

The combat is a dungon crawler.

You move with a 4 party tea through verious dungons, from room to room, missions can be to explore, skirmish, or boss fights.

The placments of the heroes are important(it's 2D) So infront you should have somme tanky guys. The enemy are alos in this formation. Not only do my tanks have to be in front to take some of the beatings. But they have weapons they dosn't have the reach to hit from place 3 or 4. So in 3 or 4 you should have ranged and healers.

There are attacks that can move yours or the enemies. so it might be a good idea to move the enemies tanks backwards to they can't do much damage. And the enemy will do the same to you.

There is no manual save, all you do is permanent, you loose a hero he/she is gone.

In the start it's not that bad, it's free to hire heroes and there is almsot always someone willing to sign up.

But once you level up some of them, loosing one is a hard hit.

I have a "highwayman" that is level 3 and quite powerfull in this early game. I can't loose him!

Before a mission you can buy food, tourches, anivenom ect. They cost money and can only be used for that mission, so if you spend 1000 coins of gear, you better get more then a 1000 out of the dungon or you will go in the red.

It's a nervebiting game, I had one of my "jesters" beeing at deaths door. and he was attacked. And I was holding my breath… HE DOGED!!! I killed the fishperson guy and finished the quest.

Oh and looting ain't easy, that chest might as well be cursed as having a nice topaz in it.

It has a lovely art style.

Here is a nice long video explaning the game in much more detail.

Seems neat but really involved…not sure that I have the time anymore but I wish that I did.

It does take a lot to survive a dungeon run. Balancing the torch light level, sanity, and health of your party is tough but really engaging. Lots of Lovecraft goodness as mentioned.

If you like games that are tough on purpose…this is a GREAT dungeon crawler. It is turn based so you have time to ponder strategy. You WILL lose party members. Sometimes it's a full party wipe. Slowly but surely you will gain ground.

Agreed on the art style. Amazing game all around.

Interesting – old school game with some new twists. I tried Castle Grimrock recently for some of this old feel, but this seems much more involved.

I almost lost my highwayman in a fight, I named in George III. He is my most powerfull hero, but I'm starting to get a few more good ones.

The original trailer for this is still one of my favourite game trailers.

Well after several hours of gaming I have lost four heroes (I.E. Cannon Fodder to make money) with three of them coming from one party. I only had one more room to clear as well.

But with the Men at Arms being the only individual left in the group and well being at only around 5 hitpoints left heading back to town was the right thing to do.

I have learned one thing those individuals who come in on the Coach are nothing but Cannon Fodder and the most important thing first is to upgrade your town buildings.

So if that means pushing individuals until they are completely crazy and end up with negative traits so be it.

Use and abuse and then dismiss them until you have gotten enough money in the bank.

I have also learned to hate the Caretaker since when I have an hero that wants to de-stress he is sitting in the one spot that I need, which means the hero does not get de-stressed and is not ready to be stressed out again for two weeks.
