Does anyone else have trouble with the color green on microscale vehicles?

Just a toe in the water sort of question. Does it put people off GHQ only being able to buy in packs? I know I often get tempted by them, then back down as I want "one of x, two of y" etc.

I appreciate it could just be me. What does everyone else do. Buy 5 and use 4, storing the odd spare? Sell them? Is there a GHQ marketplace for the spares?

But definitely lovely vehicles. Maybe one day…

The price that put me off to be honest – I've always been tight and I remember being tempted when stocked them in Virgin in the 90's but then working out how much a unit would cost ….

At $12 USD per 5 vehicles I usually just go ahead. At this point I have a pretty large collection so I'm good with it. From a retail perspective it's an enormous PITA to sell tiny little bits like that for $2 USD each. These are my WW2 Soviets:

In any case a major reason to use microarmor is so you can get LOTS of vehicles on a reasonable size table.

By the way, if you want to buy in smaller lots have you looked at C in C? Packed in 3s for $5 USD/pack.

Dragon Armor and Hobby Master (1:72) are up to almost $40 USD per tank now. So, in my humble opinion, GHQ is still a bargain.

For the majority of the models these are basically in a platoon pack. Where it gets bad is where you need 6 of something, now have10, so might as well get 5-10 more

Dynaman878928 Jan 2016 7:34 a.m. PST

Does not bother me with the normal 5 per packs. It is the guns where I have to get the tows for the gun and towed and deployed versions. I don't normally care about the tow vehicles or the towed version. (a few sure but not for every gun)

I like them fine. ATGs are an especially good value as they seem to come with all the component parts-crew, gun, tow vehicle. 5 tanks per pack is also pretty good. I am building my forces for bathtub sized games.

Back in the late '70's early '80's i had a massive ghq/c in c collection. Now i want back in for modern and i'm kicking myself for selling it all.
Anyway, ghq is the "cadillac" of wargaming pieces. And $12 USD for 5 is still better than $12 USD for 1 15mm tank.
You do know you can buy singles from GHQ.

steamingdave4728 Jan 2016 9:05 a.m. PST

Here in the UK, GHQ retail at £8.40 GBP for 5 tanks/ 2 aircraft. Locally produced Heroics and Ros are about 80 pence each and can be brought in whatever number you like. However, side by side comparison has convinced me that they are worth the extra- some of the GHQ tanks are nearly as detailed as my 1/144 stuff.

At roughly $2.40 USD per vehicle I have thought twice at times too. A 15mm Napoleonic infantry figure runs about 55 cents and has similar metal content but maybe not the same pristine detail. C-in-C is a good option. Buying five only bothers me when I need one, raising the cost per figure to $12 USD (and cost per gaming unit).

Having said that, it is a personal choice. They are the best and I have a couple thousand moderns between US/Soviet/German/British/Arab/Israeli/ Iran/Iraq/India/Pakistan. And that is after selling my WW2 collection to go with 10mm.

You can buy them singly from GHQ, see their FAQ. I've done it for command and radio vehicles and when I needed to hybridize some CM-11s.

Mako1128 Jan 2016 11:32 a.m. PST

I've read that single-piece prices for their minis can be shockingly high.

Probably better to buy a pack, and sell the balance of what you don't need, or keep the extras on hand in case something gets broken, or lost.

On the plus side, probably a boon to Scotia and H&R, which sell their vehicles individually.

Try looking into their combat command packs if you are just starting off. They are usually a full company of vehicles plus a bunch of single support and command vehicles.

As far as infantry go, I much prefer Adler over GHQ's.

John Secker28 Jan 2016 3:01 p.m. PST

Siggian, I agree about Adler infantry, you can also get specific items like Lewis guns in smaller numbers. But overall I am GHQ all the way for vehicles. When I was a poor student I bought the cheapest models, and some of them I still have, and it's hard to work out what they are. Nowadays to be honest the cost of the lead is insignificant considering the amount of time it takes me to paint and base them. I am not rich, but I can afford to buy far more than I have time to paint. So I might as well get the best, to make the most of my limited painting and modelling skills.

Who asked this joker28 Jan 2016 3:12 p.m. PST

Adler WW2 infantry are quite nice. The chunky look makes it easy to see what they are. I quite like them.

fred218428 Jan 2016 3:52 p.m. PST

With respect on the talk on random numbers of vehicles in a box, and the fact they give you odd numbers to make you buy more. Battlefront do this in there flames of war range, for instance I need 3 magach in a platoon yet a standard boxset comes with two meaning you need to buy two boxes to complete it

boy wundyr x28 Jan 2016 4:46 p.m. PST

Back at a real computer, so here's the FAQ with the single item purchasing info: link

Currently it's $4 USD if you need a hull and turret, $2.50 USD for just a single hull (i.e. most armoured cars or halftracks). Pricey if you're buying 5, but then you'd buy the pack… For a one-off command or radio vehicle, I'd rather just buy one and eat the price inefficiency than spend more on five and hope I can sell four at a flea market.

The CM-11s were a pricey conversion for four, but hey, now I've got CM-11s and they look great, the PRC better watch out.

Per the OP, when I have more than I need, I either look to other users or consider it from the point of view of actual field strength units rather than paper strength. So if I have 10 Shermans, it's an understrength company.

paulgenna29 Jan 2016 8:48 a.m. PST

There is definitely a market for extra pieces. If you post on the GHQ forum I'm sure someone would buy them or possibly sell you the figs you are looking for. I buy at 1:1 levels and sometimes it gets pricey when you need that 1 piece. Usually, I start the price compare before buying the specific models. I'm currently building a T-80 division and decided the cheaper and just as nice looking route is CnC so they have gotten almost all of my orders for them. I have a T-90 Brigade and all of them came from GHQ.

wizbangs30 Jan 2016 7:18 a.m. PST

GHQ sells singles? They need to do a better job getting that out there. When I was playing micro-armor I was buying my singles from Ros or Simtac. Not nearly the quality of GHQ, but I wasn't going to shell out $10 USD-$12 for a single… Although I have, on occasion, bought the full pack and made wrecks out of the rest.

Marc the plastics fan14 Apr 2016 2:25 p.m. PST

Ok. So who is selling in the UK, or are they always a US import?

Thanks

fred218414 Apr 2016 2:49 p.m. PST
