Hi folks,

I've got a tournament game against Scots coming up, and almost no experience with them. I don't know what my opponent's list will be but probably a bit of everything, and it's likely to be a straight Clash of Warlords. From what I can see, their board either gives lots of defense dice, or lots of defense dice which turn into lots and lots of attack dice.

With 6 points against offensive armies, I've found success with 1x8 warriors for pinning a flank, 2×6 hearthguard to do the fighting, 1x4 hearthguard to defend the Jarl, and berserkers to detonate on the enemy chieftain. This is six Saga dice with one spare.

However, for more defensive Scots I'm considering making this 2x8 hearthguard to overcome the extra defense, berserkers for mutually-assured destruction of the largest spearmen block, and 2x4 warriors to guard the Jarl and provide the reserve Saga die.

Comments? Advice? Scenarios I should try to veto?

Hi Muerto. You should take a look at the Saga forum where there are 148 threads on Scotts and their tactics alone. Not to mention all the other factions.

The Scotts are tough. But there is a section on Viking tactics that should help you figure out a winning plan.

My thoughts on your list;
The Scotts will be only one opponent at the tourney, you need to build your Vikings to be able to counter all factions. A unit of Levy bowmen might well be a good addition to your list also.

Thanks Skipper John.

Unfortunately it's 148 posts rather than threads, with only 5 mentioning Vikings. However, I learnt something none-the-less.

Scott is a person's name. Scotts – a number of people all called Scott. The term is Scot, Scots or Scottish.

Please get this right. You wouldn't want the rest of the world describing you as Amerrican or Americann?

My apologies, I didn't realize my misspelling might offend.

You wrote;
"Scotts – a number of people all called Scott."

That was my intent.

At least you didn't call them scotch……

I'm Scottish and it didn't offend me.

So one possibility is to purposely misspell the name of the faction in hopes it throws your opponent off and causes them to make a mistake.

But seriously, the Scots board is fairly dice intensive since you have to go through a string of abilities generating defense dice and then converting them to attack dice and whatnot. So they tend to favor big units. This should play into your berserkers hand. You can also try to win the fatigue game and pile fatigue onto their unit with a number of small attacks, and use your fatigue shedding abilities to leave them at a disadvantage.

As for scenarios, you are not going to want the Scot to be the defender of the village, so bid low on that one.

It just so happens I am a Scot, and it just so happens my opponent is a Frenchman at a Napoleonics club full of Brits, so the obvious battle plan is to open with the spelling and end it in the carpark like this:

Thanks for the more serious insights, Nochules – I think a strategy is falling into place.

Scotts – a number of people all called Scott.

Or a first name and last initial…

Or..you could always get a set of historical wargame rules that don't depend on careful interpretation of a list of questionable attributes printed on a card?
