I just finished glueing together six of the FF teutonic knights. I like the figures just fine. But, the idea of a big white glob in the middle of the table with all white barding and all white surcoats puts me off. Are there any alternate colors I could use for some of the twelve once they are done? |

Not really but you could use colours on their helmets and helmet decorations which looks quite effective when contrasted with their monochrome outfits. |

Thanks Frothers. And before anyone asks why I bought them if I feel this way. When AoW was going out of business I bought four different boxes of FF for less than 80 bucks. I was one of the lucky ones that received what I ordered. |

If they don't have cloaks, or you can leave them off, then they could be Germans (or all sorts of other nations) with the whole range of heraldry. The TKs had all sorts of non-brother knights fighting alongside them. |

You could do the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, but there's a lot of white again. |

You could throw in a couple "guest Crusaders", knights who would travel from across Europe to join the Teutonics for a campaign season for fun and brownie points with the church. They would retain their own heraldry. |

If you don't like uniformity, then don't paint Military Orders. It's that cut and dried…. |

The Teutonic knights were generally only a small proportion of the knights in their armies. Lots would be German knights on a sort f mercenary Crusading holiday and even knights from France, England, Bohemia etc turned up for a campaign and paid their own cost. I'd go to one of the heraldry sites such as Early Blazon and look for Simple but colourful German coats if arms. I recall that the Society of Ancients sell a simple cheap booklet on the Teutonic Crusades. It may not have herakdry, but its a good short history. Tgeir site is soa.org.uk |

Thanks for all the help, looks like I will probably go with alternate german knights. There are some good examples I found on the FF site in the gallery area. |

Teutonic Sergeants wore grey with a T on their surcoat/cloak. Some flags/banners were white and red. Later they employed many mercenaries. Who knows what they typically wore? |

As "Lewis" pointed out, the actual "Brother Knights" were few in numbers The bulk of any Teutonic led force would be "lay" knights. So they would look like any other chivalry. I see a scattering of Teutonic Knights at the front of a unit of lay brothers, i.e. temporary knights ad sergeants serving in the Teutonic army…. |
