So I recently watched a six hour documentary about the Spanish Civil War on Youtube. (I often watch videos while painting to pass the time) Not surprisingly, this sparked my interest and I dug out the 28mm SCW figures that I bought years ago but never actually started to paint. My plan is to build a Nationalist platoon for use with Chain of Command. But I'm having trouble finding a good color match for the uniform. What is a good color match using either Vallejo or Reaper paints? I saw one guide recommend Vallejo's "Russian Uniform", but that doesn't look right to my eyes. Any suggestions? |

Send me an email as I have a good painting guide I can send you. David.Jackson@canada.ca |

You can also give a try to those free PDFs we at Minairons published shortly ago. The one for Nationalists can be downloaded from here. Cheers, Lluís |

There are a thousand different color schemes around the internet. I use my own compromise: German field grey, a sepia wash, and then a dry brush of Russian Uniform and Khaki for highlights. All Vallejo. |

I have another 16 Legion on the painting table at the moment. This is my guide, it's probably a bit too green, but I like the effect. link

Thanks for the input, gang. That's the sort of input I was looking for. In particular I dig those figures you post the photos of, Scrivs. Yes, they are probably a bit "off" on the green. But they look good. In any event, there is always going to be some distortion in color shade when you are painting miniatures. Now I need to get to work on my own little bad of fascists! |

Rather than post a new topic, here is a couple of questions about helmets as well: -Did Nationalist troops ever wear Adrian helmets, or was that mostly a Republican thing? -I see references online to the Spanish model helmet unpainted. How are you representing that? I would assume without consistent care an unpainted helmet would start to rust before long. I have a pretty convincing technique for painting rust, but don't want to over do it. Thoughts? |

I only have anecdotes to offer in response but maybe it will help. I've read accounts where both sides looted the helmets of the other as neither always well equipped, especially early on. So while Adrian helmets are usually associated with the republic, they were definitely sometimes worn by the Nationalists. As for rust, I think it depends on the type of helmet to some degree, but I would err on the side of caution and not overdo it – maybe a couple of figures? I read about a Czech-made helmet pretty recently found in a dug-out that didn't have a spot of rust on it, but those were known for their quality. Personally, I'm content with paint "chips" more than rust for helmets. The slightest dry-brush of gunmetal grey on the edge of the helmet. |
