One thing I've discovered ordering 15mm Napoleonic figures is the variation of quality within ranges. Since I'm currently purchasing figures from the Battle Honors and Old Glory ranges and I've finally gotten to the Portuguese infantry, I was wondering if anyone has a preference between the two. I was thinking that if BH Portuguese are anything like BH Spanish then that would be the way to go.

I went with OG for my Portuguese.

Many think their Spanish are some of their best 15mm Napoleonics that they released. So if you didn't like those you probably won't like their Portuguese I would guess.

You also may want to consider the Warmodeling/Fantassin/Can't recall their latest name range.

Would you consider AB?

Jcfrog27 Jan 2016 3:07 a.m. PST

They ( but not so much their short muskets) be significantly smaller in size than Franch and British etc.
Still the dase in the 20 th century!
unfortunately not the way of miniatures makers.

I don't understand that message…

Ipad typing in train…and not re read.sorry
The Portuguese (but not so much their short muskets) should be significantly smaller in size than French and British contemporaries etc.
Still the case in the 20 th century!
Unfortunately that is not the way of miniatures makers.

My 15mm Portuguese are 100% Lancanshire Models.

The quality is OK and price, especially when purchasing Battle Packs is unbeatable, AFAIK.

Thanks all for responding!

Yes Doctor X, I think the Battle Honors Spanish are incredible. I'm not sure how it works with BH but someone mentioned in an old post that Barton's later sculpts for BH are much better than the earlier ones. I'd say the BH range runs from so-so (I was not particularly impressed by the British infantry – too flat.) to spectacular (the aforementioned Spanish, many of the French, many of the Austrians.) If consensus suggests that the Portuguese are on par with the Spanish I would make haste purchasing them.

I do like the AB sculpts, Timmo and I know many consider them to be the finest of the Napoleonic lot. I have decided to stay closer to the 15mm size, however.

I'm guessing Dave, that you have some experience with the BH Portuguese. Are they as good as the BH Spanish?

marshalGreg27 Jan 2016 12:32 p.m. PST

It would be a good to see what they look like ( BH Portuguese) so if someone can post a picture of them would be great. In JJ's blog you can see the Warmodelong/AB mix he does …

and they come out very well!

Mine are the OG and I am not real happy with them so far-2 regiments …to date.

Yes, if someone would want to post a photo showing 15mm Battle Honors Portuguese, I'd be much obliged. At some point I might like to post some photos as well but I've not done that before and do not know the best way to do that here at TMP.

I'm curious marshalGreg, what is it about the OG Portuguese that you don't particularly like?

Also, I notice that Dave Jackson wrote that he did prefer the Battle Honors figures. Dave, did you mean BH figures in general or specifically the Portuguese?

marshalGreg28 Jan 2016 10:00 a.m. PST

The quality of the sculps and pose animation just do not satisfy me as have many of the British or older French sculps of the OG.
Specifically, the way they are holding the muskets, along with the body posture, and finally how crisp (or lack of) the shape could have been especially the shako and cords. Thus they are bit more difficult to paint and general look of the unit is flat.

I wish I could place a picture, but do not have a blog or "cloud" to create a link from currenlty.

Thanks marshalGreg. Now I'm thinking Battle Honors might be better.

I was checking around the internet and was lucky enough to find this link to Old Glory 15mm Portuguese.

To me they're looking pretty good! Of course, the pro paint job helps. I will continue my search for Battle Honors – no success as yet.

marshalGreg29 Jan 2016 10:08 a.m. PST

Agree Gallocelt, McPhee's painting really does helps!
These are also the march attack PPN02 and it appears these are a little better than the PPN02 advancing which is only what I have completed any painting with so far.
I have to check if I have any of the PPN01 in my stock pile "for painting".
I hope this helps a little.
Still curious on what the BH versions look like!

The search for Battle Honors Portuguese continues. I was able to find a photo of unpainted Cacadores on a blog site:

Still not Portuguese regulars . . .

I have about 100 Battle Honors Portuguese Infantry. They're typical Battle Honor's quality and size.

I do have one major gripe though. They only come in two poses. The 'march attack' figures are all the same – marching with musket on the shoulder. The 'advancing' pose contains only one pose – musket pointed forward at waist height. This becomes really annoying when trying to create a formation that is several stands deep as the second row is poking the first row with their bayonets.

The do come with officers, drummers and flag guys. Note that the flags are pre-molded so you cannot use paper flags. More durable but harder to paint.

I do not have any Old Glory Portuguese. I have recently purchased and painted AB Portuguese – very nice. A google image search will reveal painted examples for both of these ranges.

Stephen,

Thanks for that information. I'll probably go with Old Glory for my Portuguese. What you mentioned about poses and the pre-molded flags was important. This forum is great!

Doctor X, I guess I had Battle Honors on the brain. I will look into Old Glory Spaniards. It might be a bit late for the infantry but perhaps for the cavalry.

just for the record, Battle Honors Spanish come in a wide variety of poses and they're very nice figures.
