In games where there is a clear attacker and defender, which would you rather play? Or if you have a storming the castle game, would you rather defend the tall walls with a few stout men, or would you rather be part of the attacking hordes climbing up ladders and such? A) I will take the defense of the castle (or city or town or trenches etc) with fewer men! B) I want a ton of troops all streaming forward to attack the castle (or other objective)! C) I don't mind as long as it's a rule set I like with players and game masters who are fair and fun. D) I dislike sieges and similar "attack the castle" type games. E) I don't like wargames, but I like to paint miniatures. F) What is a "siege"? |

It is not a siege if you are attacking the walls. That is called a castle assault and those are quite fun to game. A true siege is simply surrounding them and waiting for them to starve, very boring to do. |

I get more enjoyment out of A, to be honest, but will play either with good company to play with. |

It should read "Would you rather attack or defend?" In the title. My apologies. I agree with Bashy! A true siege game would be dreadfully dull. |

Mostly C While it is true that you have more options as an Attacker and attacks usually "call the shots", I play a rule-set that gives a big advantage to the Defender and that balances with the fun of seeing your plan work in attack. |

C but given the choice B I used to prefer to play on the defense but now I like to take the battle to the enemy rather than the other way around |

C, then prefer to attack. |

C – Both options have enjoyable challenges. And it makes for more enjoyable tournament like play to alternate. |

A – and an enemy I can have a laugh and drink with after the game that would be fine, and if I could have 6 walls and a bunch of axemen called Druss even better. |

C, and as TheGiantTribble says someone to "have a laugh and drink with after the game" Cheers Ian |

C is the critical answer. If it ain't fun, why do it? However, I always want my opponent(s) reacting to my attacks rather than visa versa. Strive to seize the initiative I say. I've done very few games going over the walls, the Alamo being the only one that jumps to mind. But I'd like to someday conduct a siege and eventually assault a breech. At least once. |

Definitely C. It's all about the fun of the game. |

My experience is generally that people prefer attacking to defending, there is more to do and it is more dynamic during the game. That is certainly the case for team vs umpire/system type games. I have a done a few 'defensive' games like that but they are hard to design to be fun for the defence team, attacking ones are much easier. |

I am only speaking of battles not sieges. I prefer defense. I prefer this because it is also a barometer of the rules. The defender should always have the odds on his side. If the sides are equal and the attacker has a preponderance of wins then the rules are wrong. Only military genius' or very lucky commanders can pull off a clear win against superior forces. War gamers can be lucky but none of them are military genius' no matter how much they think they are. |

Well a siege is what I do when I paint so I'll take B |
