I've been reading the rules this weekend for TSS and I'm looking forward to starting a force. My one problem is that I see AAR from people running individual basing and group basing but I can't find the rules that outline what the basing suggestions are. Am I missing something?

Schogun24 Jan 2016 2:28 p.m. PST

Units are small. Casualties are figure removal. So individual basing is standard. Base size doesn't matter. I base regular infantry on square bases so they can form line. Skirmishers on circular bases. Officers on circular bases, but maybe larger to include decorative touches. Cav are individually based, too.

You can use any basing – just so long as you can track casualties – it will work perfectly well with multi based figures. What you do need is a few single figures for the Big Men/Leaders.

Thanks for the replies guys. One more question if anyone can answer, I noticed in the rules it mentions musicians but it doesn't tell me how I recruit them or the rules surrounding their use other than their effect on officer orders, is there any chance someone can clarify how you acquire them?

A musician is attached to the senior Big Man in the unit. Their only game effect is for the issuing of orders (which vary according to the instrument). TSS, like it's parent Sharp Practice does not have a points system.

The lack of a points system was why I was confused really, I couldn't understand why you wouldn't take a musician since their would be no penalty in doing so.

I couldn't understand why you wouldn't take a musician since their would be no penalty in doing so.

But that is the whole point. Infantry units in the period always had musicians. The rule is simply a way to make them useful in a similar manner to real life.

There is no penalty for taking a musician. In fact there is a penalty for NOT doing so!

TSS, like Sharp Practice is designed for scenario games.
There are a couple of books of excellent scenarios available for TSS via the Lardy website. I'd recommend getting those.

Would it be odd to base them in lines of 4? I can't think of any problems personally but perhaps I'm overlooking something. I have a few 80x20 bases I could use to do 4 soldiers in a line, or I can order some square bases

Dexter Ward26 Jan 2016 2:48 a.m. PST

If you base them in lines, you'll have trouble when moving along narrow roads and across bridges.
2x2 squares will work better, or individual bases perhaqps with movement trays,

BeefForDinner27 Jan 2016 7:35 p.m. PST

I hadn't thought about that, so thank you! I've decided to just base them individually on 20x20 square bases, that way I'm not restricted by fixed 4 man bases.
