Is anyone else unclear about the process of close attacks in Bolt Action? Anyone care to explain it – specifically in relation to attacking a unit in a building – also, ..what if there's more than one unit in the building such as a section and a command group/MMG team/whatever? |

UFB, As far as I know, You can only assault ONE unit at a time. Your units should be separated by at least 1 inch. Even in a building. You cannot charge past one unit to get to another. (If you pass within 1 inch of another enemy unit) So you would have to pick the Infantry unit, MG Unit or HQ unit, if they were equidistant. If not you must assault the nearest one, (unless you would not pass within 1 inch of the forward unit. I know, I know. It kinda makes sense. You don't run past some enemy troops to kill other enemy troops. They are all the enemy!) Troops assaulting units on the ground floor of a building, stop at the building, touching it. One must reach an opening. They then assault the closest enemy unit, but they fight at the same time. The attacker looses the chance to fight first because of entering an unknown situation. I'm not sure how to handle the other units that occupy the same floor, ie- the MG or HQ units. But after you win the first close assault you get to regroup, so I let my men regroup inside the building and when, or if, you assault the NEXT unit, you WOULD get to fight first as per the regular Close Assault rules. For troops on different floors there are rules on page 104. That's how we do it. Does this help? Peter board2deathterrain.com |

"we'll assume most buildings are big enough for a single unit to occupy each floor" Page 100 I would assume there is only one unit on each floor, so when you assault the building, assuming you are on the ground outside, you are assaulting the bottom floor which is occupied by only one unit. |

Some, in fact most of my (city) buildings are pretty big. We let up to 3 units on each floor for those. But yeah, the rules do say that. |

At our club we use some common sense. We assume that more then one support unit (sniper, officers, FO etc) can fit on a floor if a squad isn't there. We also use the 'large building' rule where anything over 6" can be split up into sections that can hold one unit each. Our biggest building is two floors, each with two sections. |

Got very helpful feedback from Alessio on this. A while back I umpired a game with loads of players and found that they were playing three (at least) rather different versions of Bolt Action. The fact that it was n't a problem and that everyone played happily strikes me as saying something rather positive about the robustness of the system. |
