Following Riachuelo I am looking around for another 1/1200 scale naval project to be cast in metal. I currently have a couple of personal favorite options in mind namely the battle of Lissa 1866 or the Chile Peruvian Pacific conflict of 1879. Does anyone else on this forum have any interest in seeing one of these fleets being made in 1/1200 . Please note that I have no interest in making these models in any other scale other than 1/1200 as for me personally the next scale up is too expensive and the next scale down will mean the models will lack certain detail so I won't enjoy making them. |

The Chilean / Peruvian war is a natural one to go for I think, but it may also be wirth fleshing out the Paraguayan War range with the various ironclads and other types that weren't at Riachelo |

2nd David's suggestion but while 1/1200 is nice it is prohibitively expensive. |

Maybe for thee and me, but the work on the previous ships is SMASHING. SOMEONE will, and has in the past, come up with the scratch for them. wargamer6: What sort of prices do you charge to share your work? Didn't notice any references in the previous posts. As for the original question, I wasn't familiar with the other battle, but Chile/Peru ships would be awesome. Remembering my opinion is lessened by my skinflint nature. ;->= Doug |

Actually not that expensive – Phil's Riachuelo models are gorgeous and the complete set was less than £75.00 GBP My only regret is that I've not had time yet to build them (they are in the queue though!) |

If you are able to do some kit work, and are willing to consider larger ships (1/600) The hulls for Independencia and Huascar are available for $6 USD and $7 USD respectively from Bay Area Yards. The Peruvian monitors are ACW Passaic class and available for $12 USD each at Thoroughbred Figures. The wooden ships are more problematic, but likely can be converted from an ACW range. Again, Bay and Thoroughbred offer screw and sidewheel sloops and frigates. They aren't free, but not ridiculously expensive. I don't see these as cost prohibitive--but it's also the scale I game in. The two ships missing are the Chilean central battery frigates. They'd be pretty good sized too. But with the navies relatively small, I can't imagine these being prohibitively expensive at 1/1200 if somebody makes them or if you wish to scratchbuild them. |

When I made my Riachuelo set of ships I charged between £3.00 GBP to £4.00 GBP per ship depending on the size of model. Okay they weren't produced up to the standards of Langton models but they were reasonable enough representations for wargaming purposes and were sold at half the price. 1/600 models are better detailed but as most of that detail is pure invention due to the lack of accurate plans and good photos, Because of their larger size they are often made out of resin and also from a personal from a point of view I am unhappy that you need tables twice the size to play games on due to the larger turning circles. To be honest I don't much like 1/1200 turning circles either but I can't produce a decent enough looking model in 1/2400 to make it worth my while making any . |

Guess I have not seen Phil's ships. BTW who is Phil and where can I find his ships? I was thinking of ships like those from Mercator, Navis, etc. Which run quite a bit more than what you guys seem to be talking about. |
KSmyth | 24 Jan 2016 12:08 p.m. PST |
Allen, yup, those would be spendy, but don't think they do these ships either. The largest seem to be the Chilean armored frigates that weigh in at about 3,000 tons. And I echo your question about the mysterious Phil and his ships. |

This is the first I have heard about 1200 scale Riachuelo ships. Are these still available, and what is the contact info to the maker? Wargamer6, please tell us how does this work. |

Hi, for those who don't know what this is about I am a wargamer who wanted to make a complete set of models for the battle of Riachuelo in 1/1200. As there was nothing available in any scale I decided to use my skills as a hobby caster to produce the models I wanted (see the recent TMP thread on Riachuelo). Making masters and moulding models is a very expensive business so I asked other TMP members if they wanted to support this enterprise by buying copies of the models that I made to try and recoup some of my production costs. I am now seeing if anyone would like to support a similar project that I have in mind . The production run will be very small so here is an opportunity to buy a unique set of models that will probably never be commercially available to anyone in the future. |

I'm happy to go on record here as saying I would be happy to support your enterprise :) |

I can confirm that Phil's models are excellent, and quickly shipped (not to mention carefully packed). I am definitely interested in both Peru/Chile and Austria/Italy. The Pacific War actually doesn't involve many ships, so would be less expensive and require less lead time. In fact, I would add the British cruiser Shah and corvette Amethyst, which fought the Huascar in the Action of Pacocha. I also echo the request for the Brazilian Ironclads and the ship the Paraguayans had on order for "what if" scenarios. |

I would echo the request to include Shah and Amethyst too |
Allen57 | 24 Jan 2016 11:42 p.m. PST |
Definitely would buy the Peru/Chile ships and would like to see Shah and Amethyst included. I already have Lissa done in 1/2400. |

I personally want 1/1200 models of the French 1860s ironclads. I can already get the Gloire class and Magenta class from Red Eagle Miniatures (the old Skytrex models), but I would also like to have Couronne, Belliqueuse and a few Provences. For Lissa, what the world really needs is the wooden ships that were there, in 1/1000 scale. The old Houston's 1/1000 ironclads are still available from Great Endeavors. I have a few of those, but I've never built them and I'm not buying any more until I can get the wooden ships to go with them. I'm right there with wargamer6 on the downsides of 1/600 (too much table space needed!). Too bad, because I am hopelessly in love with the Thoroughbred models, I love the variety I can get between Thoroughbred and BAY, and I love 1/600 as a modeling scale (even the shore terrain). 1/1200 is just a better "big battle" scale. - Ix |

Okay, I have given this some thought and decided to go with the minimum number of ships to keep the costs down. If anyone has any thoughts on other vessels then now is the time to chip in with your ideas . Chile Ironclads :- Cochrane & Blanco Encalada Corvettes :- O'Higgins, Chacabuco and Esmeralda 3 Yarrow torpedo boats Peru Ironclads :- Huáscar & Independencia Corvettes :- Union , America & Pilcomayo 3 Herreshoff torpedo boats Royal Navy Cruiser HMS Shah Corvette HMS Amerthyst |

The Peruvian monitors are ACW Passaic class and available for $12 USD USD each at Thoroughbred Figures. Actually they're Canonicus class, but I don't know of anyone who makes those in 1/1200 scale, so I guess I'd buy a few if Phil made them. :-) - Ix |

Langton makes Canonicus. It's his/their ACW27. link |

We released some new 1/1200 ACW vessels this past summer. We will be releasing six more, hopefully by April, and Canonicus class will be one of them. link Toby Barrett Thoroughbred Figures 83176562-FA76-4641-8D27-9A4679F7A5FD 249DABB9-7846-4F1B-8D81-34597C0C6121 Sent from my iPad |

Just wondered how you're getting on with your project, Phil? I've got someone to buy my children to raise the necessary funds when you're ready ;-) Nick |
wargamer6 | 12 Apr 2016 3:49 p.m. PST |
Hi Nick, as usual with these projects I got sidetracked into doing other things. I started out making some Pacific war ships and then bought a couple of books which led me astray. So far I have made 8 masters for the Confederate River Defence Fleet then I made 12 Brazilian/Paraguayan Ironclads. Unfortunately I can't mould any of these models yet until I finish off making the original models for the Chilian and Peruvian navies as I need to fill a complete mould before putting them into production. I suppose that the good news is I will have three times the number of models that I originally planned to make but its going to take a bit longer before they are all ready. |

Many thanks for the update – I'll carry on with one of my many other projects in the meantime. And let the kids back out of the shipping crate. |
