When I made smoke screens (for WW2 games) out of painted sponge my efforts caused more than the odd eyebrow to be raised. I hope my efforts at asteroids for X-Wing meet with slightly less outrage. The flight stands, made out of odds and sods I had lying around, are serviceable too, IMHO.

Anyway, you can let me know what you think. I'm thick skinned (hell, I'm still using my sponge smoke screens in public) so I can take it.

I like it! I may have to steal your technique.

No need, be my guest.

They look awesome! Much better than mine even.

However, from a practical gameplay point of view, rectangular bases instead of bases shaped roughly like the asteroids could cause some "collisions" where near misses might have otherwise occurred.

Brilliantly done!

Thanks.

Your sponge has a lot more holes than mine. Mine was much more uniform with hardly any 'cheese like' holes.

I know what you mean about the flight stand bases. I'm not sure how they'll play. However, the bases are very thin, perhaps just over 1 mm thick, and can be easily overlapped by ship bases without, so to speak, 'rocking the boat'. That being the case, I might drill my 'official' cardboard asteroids with a 3 mm hole so that the marker can be slipped over the aluminium tubing to give an irregular shape for game play. I'm only playing for fun (not competition) so I'll see how they play before I take that step. It is sometimes surprising how little things like that actually effect game play, especially when I'll probably be playing in an arena larger than the 3 x 3 competition space.

This is my play mat, artificially made smaller for my first, and only so far, full game.

So….why can't asteriods move?

olicana23 Jan 2016 10:12 a.m. PST

I'm quite sure they can and do. I haven't played much X wing, but I'd rather imagined them moving, in a set direction across the space in which the action occurs. Of course, as dead objects in game play, they would not change velocity or direction.

We use a random move system so that sometimes they don't move at all, other times they move in a random direction on a clock using a D12 1 or 2 move lengths.
D6 1-2 no move, 3-4 1 move length, 5-6 2 move lengths. Direction D12 as a clock face with 12 at the top of the table and working around. Works well, though usually ends in TIE fighters hitting or being hit by them.

They look amazing to me!

As I've said elsewhere, I think the smokescreens are brilliant.

I'm fine with movement. Not so sure about the random, Vigilant, but if it works for you, go for it!

Heck, 'spawn' another asteroid; 'it was invisible until the other rock bounced off of it!'
