Back in the day, it was three years or so between Star Wars movies. Marvel Comics were producing comics to fill in the gap. They were left more or less to their own devices, and one of the new characters they came up with was a rabbit-like humanoid with green fur. I know I'm not imagining this, but I can't for the life of me think of his name. Thanks in advance for your help. Ron |

First appeared in 1977. Wow! He's got to be the inspiration for Bucky O'Hare. |

Reportedly hated by Lucas as lowering the dignity of Star Wars. He then turns around and gives us Jar Jar. |

He then turns around and gives us Jar Jar. Yes. I'm still floored there's a petition to have Lucas direct Episode VIII. He had three chances to make another good movie and flunked them all. Why give him a forth? -Will |

Don't those stupid flint knapping Care Bears, hate those things. Yes, in retrospect, that should have been our first warning sign. -Will |

Coalacanth, I actually just rebagged & rebounded my old star wars comics the other day, that's the only reason I was able to answer so quickly. It probably would've taken me a few more minutes if I hadn't. |

"First warning sign"--nope, it was some of the dialog in the first film:sometime in 78 or so Lucas admitted he winced whenever he heard some of the lines he wrote. That sort of modesty disappeared not much later. |

That sort of modesty disappeared not much later. Well, I had considered cheesy dialogue part of the Star Wars zeitgeist. Then Lucas managed to top himself in a terrible and dramatic fashion in the prequels. :P -Will |

Lucas isn't a writer; he's a storyteller. Grand vision, that's Lucas. But he needs somebody to bring that vision into a feasible reality, to handle the nuance and detail that he can't see. |

Many of the actors who have appeared in Star Wars including some familiar names have said that Lucas was not interested in the actors thoughts on scenes or their characters. He had a vision of what he wanted and brooked no interference. CGI and the grand scheme were his province. Dialogue and character development were not. |

As the only person that liked Jar Jar Binks, I'm going to start a petition to have him added to episode VIII. |

Man, my eleven year old self loved those Marvel comics! I think I still have a few battered far-from-mint copies around. I'll have to dig them out on this snowy morning. |

Balthazar Marduk & Mister Tibbles I too like Jar Jar Binks so I'm glad I'm not alone around here. |

There's a little more to Jaxxon ("Jack for short, which he isn't"). The story arc was created at a time when it wasn't sure whether there'd be another movie let alone what the direction would be. Splinter of the Mind's Eye was written in case Ep IV wasn't successful enough for a full blown sequel. In that environment, Lucas didn't provide Marvel's writers with any direction so they stayed away from using Luke, Leia, Vader etc. (But Han and Chewie had several arcs.) The arc with Jaxxon was a remake of Magnificent 7. |

I seem to remember one of them was the 'Starkiller Kid' who was practically identical to Luke. |

Yes the immediate post-release Star Wars 'expanded universe' was really interesting; the first 'EU' novel was the aforementioned Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was based on the 'in case Star Wars does ok but not amazing' sequel script, and was pretty odd, especially based on what we know happened later. The comics were introducing new Imperial villains like the relatives of General Tagge who were part of the 'House of Tagge', owners of a massive industrial consortium. And characters like Jaxxon who kicked off this thread. Crazy, crazy times. -Will |
