…Firearms Ever Made.

"I may be a bit biased here by my ownership of one, but I believe that the Vickers gun is one of the best all-around firearms ever made. It was designed during an era of experimentation and craftsmanship, with a quality and care that would make it today prohibitively expensive. It was exemplary in action, and served in every environment on earth through six decades and in the hands of 50 different nations. It was an infantry gun, an aircraft gun, an armored vehicle gun, and a shipboard gun.

Captain Graham Hutchison recorded this account of the Vickers in action during an attack on High Wood in August 1916 (exerpted from "The Grand old Lady of No Man's Land by Dolf Goldsmith):…"

My Grandfather, in the Machine Gun Corps, operated one on the Western Front 1916-18

A reliable and capable, venerable old soldier to be sure, but I think the M2 .50 cal is closer to my heart

For a GP, the Vickers is the one to beat.

250 round 'bursts!!!' One belt per burst.

5M rounds in 7 days is about 30K per hour. Three times 'sustained' ROF. Just about cyclic.

Standard barrel change at 10K and changeout at 45K (90 minutes) when burning up that 5M, I'd say they were 'wornout.'

With an 'adequate' ammo supply, the gun you want when the zombis hordes come your way…

Yeah, any water-cooled MG can do crazy sustained-fire stunts. Maxim/Vickers or the M1917 Browning .30cal.

I think my favorite "old soldier" is the Colt M1911, .45 ACP (and/or one of the updates with a double-column magazine).

His youtube channel is worth following.
The name of the channel/website refers more to the point of view of the American recreational shooter. He is very interested in firearms history and goes to auction houses making videos of the unusual stuff for sale (either from a historical point of view with rare/trails weapons that are for sale, or it's common non-American service piece but a nice gun to shoot that other might overlook).

A Vickers keeps shooting until you run out of water, ammo or enemies of the Crown.
