I am drawing – for the battle of Leuthen – the Aide de Camp of the General Staff of the Austrian Army during that period and I didn't find any direct info about their uniforms. Nontheless I think I found an answer: I actually found on the book MARENGO de Olivier Lapray some pictures of ADC of the Austrian Army in 1800. Considering that the senior officers had quite the same uniforms as those of SYW. So I think that the ADC's uniforms remained the same in the period 1760-1800 (except for the tricorne/bicorne change). So the uniform was: green coat with red turnbacks and red cuffs; white trousers, red collar, yellow and black sash (left shoulder – right waist) green plume on the tricorne, red saddle. Officer od the General Stab: the same but with black collar and cuffs and the sash just around the waist. |

I would be very sceptical of green as a colour for any staff related troops for the earlier period. The use of green then was either a regimental choice such as De Ligne, or indicated jaegers or such like (in non-Austrian armies). I think intuitively I would go for white – but certainly worth doing some research. Good luck in your search. |

von Winterfeldt | 25 Jan 2016 5:10 a.m. PST |
I don't know if the General Quartiermeister Stab did already exist in the 7YW in 1792 they had a dark blue coat with red facings, red waistocat and red breeches, this was changed in 1798 to darkgreen coat with black facings to make a better difference to the French Nationalguard |

Thank you von Winterfeldt!! very intersting. Actually I was searching some painting of the period and I found one where it's possible to see in the shadow an Aide de Camp: actually it looked like blue, but I thought it was green; I think now it was blue indeed. I will change my aide de camp I just did (in green!) for the blue one. (PS: there was not a risk of mixing with the Prussians at the epoch?) thanks |

Actually, I think Winterfeldt was right. I found this painting of the battle of Hochkirch in 1758, where the aide de camps in the Austrian General Staff wear blue coat, with red cuffs. So definitly blue coat! |

The Stabs Dagoon Regiment was formed in 1758 by Lacy. It's job was to guard the camp, baggage train, escort convoys etc. |

I found this painting… it seems to me they wore green coat <q/>paperbattles the figure in green faced red is Emperor Joseph II and he is wearing the uniform of his regiment. This was a dragoon regiment until 1766 then became a chevauleger regiment. Emperor Joseph II is frequently painted in this uniform (and in film, when the Emperor first meets Mozart in Amadeus he is wearing this uniform). So it is not much use for Austrian adcs. The other figure hidden away in the background is I suspect is also wearing the uniform of Emperor Joseph's Cheveuleger Regt. |
