I am in the process of trying to make some realistic cotton fields for my 28mm ACW game. It looks like the plant would come up to approximately chest height. Does that seem correct?

Also I am trying to find some 28mm miniatures that would look good in the fields to be used as "cotton pickers". Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Look at model railroad stuff. O scale.

I thought I have seen some field hands sometime in the past, but I can't remember where.

If you want to switch to hay fields, Redoubt has some figures. Front Rank also has some Napoleonic civilian figures that are worth taking a look at.

A few years back, Eureka miniatures made a set of 28mm plantation field hands who would be perfect for your project. I don't see them in the current catalog:

Possibly if you email Eureka you can find out whether they're still available.

Also I am trying to find some 28mm miniatures that would look good in the fields to be used as "cotton pickers".

They would all have run away (or at least into cover) as soon as the shooting started.

I had the same problem,a s there is n't much out there.

But try Brigade Games, "Haitian Peasants & Civilians" as part of their Caribbean Empires line.

Also a couple of figures from Old Glory 25's, Civil War Range or AWI range, civilian pack, but can't find the exact product yet? (there was a doorman and cook type civilian, I think.)

Lastly, I managed to find some OOP 25mm Frontier ACW civilians that play the part of house servants and such. One is a lady in a dress and apron, scarf on her head, and carrying a bucket. Try ebay or other places to find some?

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the PC police, are there any figures in Foundry's "Darkest Africa" range that would work or could be easily converted?

Perry Miniatures has a nice pack of civilians in their AWI range. A couple might work for your ACW project.

Of course, none of the figures look like they're actually picking cotton. You pick cotton stooped over, dragging an improbably large looking sack behind you. Source: a lot of family in Texas, pickers and ginners.

There was a nice 28mm miniature shown in recent photographs posted to an ACW painting blog showing an african american in period clothing holding his hat in front of him, watching while troops were marching by on the road. I cannot find that photograph again. Any ideas on who makes that miniature?

Finally found the miniature… it was from Redoubt!
