So i'm going to start on the russian 27th division as part of army of Sillesia at Leipzig.

Its a small division of 8 battalionsof.

I'm thinking of starting with the jegers.

But the perry box comes with 40 figures. Exactly a "full strength battalion "
But two of those figures are standard barers, .
They are not needed for jeger battalions, so I'm stuck with a akward 38 figure battalion.

Time to get your hobby knife out and start converting.

Hmmm…which rule set calls for a 40-figure battalion? Russian battalion strengths at Leipzig weren't exactly high anyway. grin

Convert standardbearers to NCOs with canes or pikes

True and when i use rules that use figure counting, I'll simply remove a base or two.

But when i use black powder it's nice to use big battalions.

Ah, gotcha! Russian battalions do tend to be on the smaller side--I use 20-22 files per vzvod or ~24 figures @ 1:20.

So the Jager good news is no flags, but you do have to paint the regiment number on the cartridge boxes. grin

I'm going to look for numbers for the battalions.

But they should not be to small most of the regiments in the division are single battalions which i assume means they combined the battalions. So they might be bigger then avrage.

It has only 7 battalions instead of 12.

Everything is have ever seen on Russian numbers are they are under manned. I think even when combined they don't reach full roster. But there are limits in war games so I keep my 1x60 battalions about 10 -11 available for musketeers, 8 – 10 for jagers

Get a mounted colonel figure and use him to fill the space that would normally be occupied by two standard bearers. A mounted colonel also adds a focus to the command base in those units that lack colours.

buy a pack of mounted officers and toss one in instead of the 2 standard bearers. that's what i did in my jager battalions. granted, i do 16 figure battalions. but the premise works.

vicmagpa121 Jan 2016 9:15 p.m. PST

especially after borodino. battalions were smaller.

Truls, once you've got your 'scale' thing sorted, and your base OOB, the main items to remember for Jaegers (vs. 'Line' Infantry) are:
1. Cartridge Boxes: scrape off any 'Flaming Grenade' emblems, and file flat, so you can free-hand the Regimental number(s) onto them.
2. Straps: Black – including the musket/rifle (instead of Red Russian leather) – often overlooked.
3. Drums: Black rims, with black leather mid-sections, cords are light brown/tan (rather than green & white 'wolf-teeth' triangles and white cords).
4. Plumes, pompons, sword-knots, shoulder straps: either follow the 'traditional' scheme with the Perry instructions, or refer to the updated site by Jonathan Gringerich: link .

Thanks Greystreak! You are the master of russians!

I orderd the mounted infantry commanders. I'm sure they'll be here before i start work on the command base.

Ps. Would officers use green trousers in winter like regular jaegers?

huevans01122 Jan 2016 2:52 p.m. PST

Officers would wear grey overalls or green breeches.
