Does anyone have access to good pictures of the back of the Barretin, the high-fronted shako worn in 1808, before they went to the stove pipe. Years ago I converted 30mm Stadden French voltigeurs to Portuguese line, and filed the shakos to a cylinder, then cut down the back to make the Barretina. Added cording, side plume, and cockade. I left the top enclosed – not false-fronted as the British Waterloo shako. Does anyone know if the top of the shako was enclosed, or was it false-fronted? GdeP |

The 1806 Pattern Shako/Barretina was definitely a false-fronted item, as shown in the sketches of Dighton. It served as the inspiration for the British 1812 (the so-called 'Belgic') model. |
