Which fantasy ruleset would you suggest for playing out the major battles in the world of Conan? |
D6 Junkie | 18 Jan 2016 5:30 p.m. PST |
I would suggest King of War, especially in 15mm would allow huge battles.

At the risk of being obvious :
Then you'll have to talk nicely to Garrissonminiatures to get the figures. |

Fantasy Games Unlimited made awesome games! They have held up well since the Hyborian Age in which they were written… |

Funny you should ask; I've been thinking about a Hyborean Age project for several years now. I'm planning on double size DBx armies with HoTT for the rules. I have no desire to get into the figure count or cost required for "Royal Armies …" |
darthfozzywig | 18 Jan 2016 6:43 p.m. PST |
Thread title should be "Hyborian Age" rather than "Hyperborean". :D |
darthfozzywig | 18 Jan 2016 6:45 p.m. PST |
Most recently, I was looking at Hail Caesar in 10mm. I keep getting hung up on how best to do Picts in 10mm. You can find a few threads I started in days gone by on the subject. :/ |

Hordes of the Things! I have a number of 15mm armies in various states of progress. |
Grelber | 18 Jan 2016 8:11 p.m. PST |
One of the Conan stories was set in Hyborian Age India. I've been mulling over that as something to build and game when I retire. Grelber |

Pedant mode still active! Hyborian, not "Hyborean", and it's properly "Hyborian Age", i.e. The age in which the Hyborian cultures dominated the world. If it's just Hyborian mass combat, that would largely only apply to Aquilonia, Nemedia, Koth, Khauran, Ophir, and Corinthia. |

Does anyone make a good Conan as king figure in 15mm? I'm not looking for a half naked barbarian… But a Conan as king of Aquilonia. Joe Collins |

Hostile Realms would be ideal. |

Big Battle Hordes of the Things (HOTT)would be fine for this. In fact Hyboria was one of the reasons it was written, the Hero element was based on Conan! Chipco's Fantasy Rules would also work well. JohnG |

Wouldn't take much to tweak Warmaster/BoFA for this… |
langobard | 19 Jan 2016 3:12 a.m. PST |
Another vote for Big Battle Hordes of the Things. The armies aren't too big to collect, and 'horde' armies are surprisingly difficult to beat… |
evilgong | 19 Jan 2016 3:36 a.m. PST |
The magic and monsters in Hyboria are so downplayed that you could use any decent ancients rules and fudge up any supernatural elements required. Or play BB Hott. David f Brown |
Calico Bill | 19 Jan 2016 5:22 a.m. PST |
I'd go with Big Battle HOTT. |
nevals | 19 Jan 2016 7:08 a.m. PST |
I haven't had time to do it, but I'm thinking of using Commands and Colors on a big scale. |

+1 to Evilgong, I think any ancients/medieval set could work, with the occasional battle having a sorcerer. DBx, Might of Arms, etc. could all work, the conan.com forum has discussions on who is what in the Hyborian Age. Most have pretty direct historic parallels, only a couple nations aren't clear. |

2nd Ed. BattleSystem accommodates both mythical monsters, and magic spells. It is based on AD&D, so if you are familiar with that system, it is easy to adapt. Figures can be 15mm to 30mm, with little tweaking required. The rules cover: open battles, city battles, siege warfare, aerial combat, and other fantasy elements. Figure ratios are typically 10:1, for troops, with leaders being individuals. Large creatures are also 1:1. Players roll one Attack Die per figure attacking, so it tends to be a bucket-o-dice game. However, it covers a great deal of situations, and troop types. I find it a blast, but YMMV. Cheers! |

I'm currently working on Sword & Spear Fantasy, and this is exactly the sort of battle that the rules are designed for. |

Kings of War would work very well as easily adaptable to all ages.. Sword and Spear fantasy would also be good when it comes out as it is very good ancient game, my personal favorite for ancient/medieval battles |
Capt Flash | 20 Jan 2016 3:00 p.m. PST |
Kings of War would be my suggestion. It would give enough variation In troop types and unit sized and is abstract enough to play in a couple of hours. For mass battles of the type DBx/HOTT delivers, I'd go with Mighty Armies, as it has more "personality" then HOTT does…. |

Mayhem's a lot of fun. Specifically for Hyboria, I'd start with RRtK, I think. That would go double for campaigns. |

Perhaps you could go back to the roots and use Tony Bath's ancients ruleset :-) |
kodiakblair | 10 Jul 2016 4:57 a.m. PST |
RRTK gets my vote. By using Ed's other systems like Swordplay and Captains & Kings you can take a fella from lowly thief to sitting on a throne commanding armies. |
PrussianMonty | 23 Jul 2016 1:51 a.m. PST |
Cannot comment on most of the rules mentioned but Kings of War has become very popular as the larger scale battles rules of choice. Gives a good game with all armies (I've seen) having their advantages and problems. I'm not a big fantasy player but I really enjoyed both the games I played with these. |

Legions of Battle by Crusader publishing is an excellent mass battle generic set. Basing is flexible. I use my DBX armies with it. All of the Crusader rules (Rank & File, March Attack, etc.) are good fast playing sets. JPK |
