It's his/her birthday. He/she has taken up wargaming relatively recently but, strangely, has a bare bookshelf. What book do you buy him/her? I nominate Henry Hyde's 'Wargaming Compendium': a mine of information.

If it is historical wargaming, then Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian war, the illustrated one that came out about 5 years or so back. If fantasy then a copy of Warmaster. If sic-fi a copy of Infinity r Heinlein's Starship Troopers. |

If it's a gift for a wargamer, he probably already has it. |

Pictors, there's a lot more to historical wargaming than Ancients. And a lot more to Ancients than Classical Greece. And Winston, the OP posited bare bookshelves. Without knowing more of the intended recipient's interests, I'd say anything by Featherstone. Hyde is also good, as is Little Wars. |

The Wargaming Compendium is an excellent book for beginners. Lots of info on history, rules to use and the variety of aspects wargamings is all about. Also beginners guide on how to paint your figures, links, etc. |

rmaker, if you haven't read Thucydides you should. It is a great work and the information in it can apply to all periods in one way or another. If one taught a political science class and used that as the only text you could probably get most of what you needed to teach out of it. |

Get him a subscription to Strategy & Tactics magazine. Tons of interesting articles covering all periods of history. A subscription to Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy is an excellent miniature gaming magazine. Same price or cheaper than a book and always stirs the imagination on a regular basis. :-) |

Actually a subscription to "Wargames Illustrated" would seem more appropriate. |
