I have started a few threads here about using The Sword and the Flame for American Revolution games. This started out as a tongue in cheek way to do the Wyoming Massacre. This battle has a spot in our hearts, since the battlefield (St Cecelia's Church parking lot and Exeter Little League field) is only three miles from my house. I made it very simple, rating Tories as Egyptian carbines, settlers as Boers, etc. So I ran the Massacre for a few years, never realizing what a genius I was. I kept refining the rules for AWI and then it struck me of the possibilities. I am now drawing up tables where Continentals are not Egyptians but have their own stats. So far I have done more Wyoming Massacre, Bennington, Concord, Cowpens, and have quite a few more battles in mind. Obviously it would be silly to attempt Monmouth or Brandywine, but don't let that stop you. I'm trying to incorporate black powder and bows, muzzle loading artillery and a few other things while retaining the hard core of TSATF. I am familiar with the Sword in the Forest, and Disperse ye Damned Rebels. But I want to do it my way. As soon as I get my ideas on paper and play tested, I will send them to Lori. It's funny how this little project inspired me to finish off a bunch of AWI figures and units that were gathering dust half finished. My main scale is currently 25/28mm but I see no problem with other scales. In fact I resurrected this project when I was given a bunch of 40mm figures. My basing standard is near universal: washers. Updates will come as I get more battles under my belt. The nice thing about this project is that tiny battles are viable. I also find it fascinating how a gamer's tactics and attitude change when he is not in command of massive brigades or divisions. |

You should talk with Lori Brom about publishing your variant. |

It would be rude and possibly illegal to not send them to her. I mean it as a tribute to Larry, and what you can do with the rules as written. |

John…er…Winston, You know, the larger battles (maybe even Monmouth, etc) could still be considered possible with the same basic system by applying the same variations you're working on to 800FE. You know, the MUCH "cleaner," simpler version of TSATF specifically aimed at a "Battalion" level game. Indeed, keep developing your TSATF variant for such as Cowpens, but carry the relevant bits over to the next logical step up to 800FE for games as large as those players are willing to go. TVAG |

I think this is awesome Mr. Smith. As a AWI gamer and a more recent sampler of TSATF I am totally for this. |

I have done larger battles with 800FE, using my element based units. I evaluate all "new" rules with one and only one criterion. "Do the results insult my understanding of how the battle would have gone?" And I was quite pleased with the results. But one thing at a time. |

Winston, Any further developments? I love TSATF and 800FE and own DYR's but would like to see your take on Larry's rules for the AWI. If you'd like, PM me at: cjaklic(ATverizon(DOT)net Thanks Karl (AKA Carl) |

I'm still working on it. I'm doing a forage game in New Jersey soon. |
