Perhaps a silly question:

I am painting a 6mm model of the above produced by Leven Miniatures ( and a fine model it is indeed).

Can anyone who has visited tell me what is (or was) the colour of the doors on the inside of the archway?

Thanks,

Alan

In the famous O'Sullivan photo, there are none.

Or do you mean small door into the "tower"? It's been colorized green here -- who knows if that's true to life or the colorizer's imagination?:

Thanks for the colour photo. I see that the ornate decoration around the top has been coloured dark, which is contrary to the current white. Even the monochrome picture shows it dark, so perhaps Also, the colour of the brickwork appears different from the reddish brick (which presumably has not changed).

My enquiry is indeed in relation to the door in the inside of the side portion: you can just see it through the archway.

Bear in mind that it is almost impossible to tell specific colors from Civil War era photographs.

I do know that dark green trim was common on brick buildings of the period, partly because dark green was a very stable paint color.

Barring a written record of the color, I think you're safe in gong with dark green for both the top trim and the door.

The ornate carving around the top, and the doors were actually a Chocolate/Dark Brown color according to period info obtained from town records of the time. The windows were trimmed in white.

Very many thanks.

And there's the written record. Good job, vagamer63.

I talked at length with the Cemetary Gatehouse historian to get my paint colors correct. The brick was painted a burgundy color at the time of the battle. It was sandblasted off in later years for some reason. The trim at the top was painted chocolate brown. The wreath and scrollwork was green and the urn on top was white. I don't recall asking him about the door color, but I went with a very common color – white. I only know what he told me.

Thanks for the further info.

Time to get the paint brushes out again!
