After several months of work, typing in a few issues every day, I finally managed to complete the index to Wargaming Illustrated "old style", i.e. issue 1 – 259 (April 1987 – May 2009). This is up to the "takeover" by Battlefront, after which my subscription ran out.

You can access the index (together with the indices for Battlegames and Miniature Wargames with Battlegames "new style") on the following page on my blog:

So, never let there be again the question whether someone has an index for Wargames Illustrated. It's all there, online and free, for everyone to comment upon, hopefully for eternity :-)

What a monsterous piece of work!. really fantastic. Thanks much for providing this. I have all the issues but could never find any thing without looking through each one.

Alas, I threw all of my WI in the skip with all my MW mags some time ago (couldn't give them away, not even the early ones) and now, unless I'm in them, I bin them as soon as I've read them. Too much else more useful to store and so little spare space to store it in.

Great resource – thanks for doing this, and for sharing !

I've still got boxes and boxes of back issues – I used to get a box out and "revisit" them every 6 months or so, but I haven't for a couple of years. I really should find time to do that, I always re-found some inspiration I'd missed first time around.

That really is the most amazing bit of synchronicity. I developed a need for such a thing just this morning and before I can even start to seriously search for it here it is. Alas it is filtered here but I can nab it when I get home.
Many thanks.

Hero!

Thnx ;-)

BTW, a number of issues from Practical Wargamer and Miniature Wargames have also been entered …

Phil, just to let you know that your work has been useful to another wargamer. I have now discovered (thanks to your index) that Martin Tomczak's series on the Prussian army in the 7YW (issues 1,4,5) was never finished.

Shame, it was a good series…

@Keef44,

Thanks!
BTW, the index is still growing. I am currently (albeit slowly) adding a stack of more than 50 issues of "Miniature Wargames" that were donated to 'the project'.

And if you think something might be missing or a specific entry might have a mistake, please let me know, and I can look into it.

A great tool, thanks very much.

One addition I would suggest:
Wargames Illustrated #205-208, A four part article by Barry Hilton: "Once Rule for you…" An article comparing the results achieved playing two popular sets of Second World War rules: Rapid Fire and GHQ Micro Armor the Game. October 2004 to January 2005.
