I've been creating measuring sticks for my SYW rules ('A Glorious War') lately. 2 for movement & musketry, a longer for artillery range and a "bounce stick" for bounce through. I use pine dowell (light & strong enough)& use contrasting paint colours to mark the different sections (eg white for close range, yellow for medium & red for long). What do others use to measure distances in wargames: rulers? Tape measures? Measuring sticks? Hi-tech laser measuring devices?
or low tech knotted string?
BTW MLK's pronouncement seems to apply to wargaming too. "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Martin Luther King, Jr. |

I believe that Senor Squint has a game that uses spans and cubits. I approve of that because I am taller than most and have larger hands and arms. |

A plain measuring tape, and I have one of those laser line things, that you stick on an electric saw, to check lines of fire. |

I've used everything from sticks to lasers at one point or another. |

Same as you Ochoin, wood dowel or square wood measured to 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 inch lengths. Artillery sticks are longer with canister, medium and long range in different colors. |

I generally use dowel rods or sticks (really dislike expanding rulers) but … *I use a miniature arrow for measurement in my Bosworth game … we similarly used swords in the award winning Six of the best … *I do like area games that dispense with the measured move entirely … *Chris Kemp's NQM uses hand spans (that's very good as it prevents movement ever being geometrically scientific) – it is very handy indeed … I like that … *I had some plastic measuring widgets made up for SoA sponsored DBA events recently – I like them too …
*I made a 'marcher' out of string for my Hannibal Crossing the Alps game … Phil |

Paper tape measure. Need to measure non linear paths. Also, often, logic. "You moved to just within close fire range and took your shot last turn. That means these guys can charge yours if they don't attack." |
