I am having trouble deciding on a scale to use for Vietnam air battles. Some gentleman at my club are in the older age bracket and so i dont want to go too small. the GHQ 1/285th stuff looks good but at $12 USD USD a plane its a bit rich….any suggestions?

Next larger might be 1/144 models (possibly cheaper)

The Tumbling Dice are very nice models, and comparatively very inexpensive, but they are tiny for old eyes.

I use 1/600 scale and I have a guy who paints them about $1 USD each if you supply planes and decals (Which I buy from Dom) but I expect they will increase slightly sometime soon. Ebay has them painted with decals for a reasonable price for well painted figures.

If you have missiles on the board I prefer 3mm or 6mm with Air War C21 rules but the Wings AT War rules seem good for pre-BVR missiles.

1/200 from AIM.

I use 1/600 too for WWII and the jet age. FWIW, an F-4 is just over 1" long in that scale, if that helps. For $12 USD you'd get at least half a squadron.

Planes are still readily recognizable in 1/600 scale, and fit neatly into 1" hexes.

though I admit preferring 1/300 planes for WW2 gaming (which are also about 1" long except for the bombers).

Check out Raiden Miniatures 1/285 range, not huge but very good, Heroics and Ross and Scotia 1/300's are good too.

1/300th Scotia.

Tumblind Dice. Nice models and not too small. I am 70, have had a cataract removal/lens implant in one eye and have cataracts in the other. I can still paint the Tumbling Dice models and identify them in play. Not so with the smaller 1/700 or 1/1200 models. The 1/300 and larger models need a much bigger table and IMHO are much fussier when it comes to painting.

Thank you gentleman….i think i will go with Raiden and use the odd GHQ for my Ace planes- (Robin Olds, Unnamed Soviet Major :))

There are some 1/350 options out there. Curiously, they're often used in aircraft carrier model kits. The plastic models are much lighter and have much more realistic (thinner) wings without being completely vulnerable.

Even if you throw away most of these, they're still dirt cheap: link link

You can use these in metal and call them MiG-17s: link (it's 4-pack, so the price isn't bad).

Shapeways has some MiG options:
