This is why the original Skytrex went out of business.

Nothing to do with the current Skytrex I hasten to add.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the connection between a Loughborough dentist and the original Skytrex?

NickNorthStar14 Jan 2016 6:31 a.m. PST

John founded and owned Skytrex. He remained a dentist, employing others to run Skytrex (including me in 1986!), but took Skytrex down in his fall.

The current Skytrex is owned by a team of ex-employees.

What a scum bag, send him down!

I always wondered what happened to the Hinchliffe large scale model range, I understand Skytrex bought the molds and then sold them on to someone.

NickNorthStar14 Jan 2016 7:11 a.m. PST

Ian Hinds the 2nd Hand dealer bought Hinchcliffe. He might have the big figures as well

IUsedToBeSomeone14 Jan 2016 7:33 a.m. PST

The 54mm Hinchcliffe figures (including the Sanderson range) are still owned by the current Skytrex – I tried to but them buy Dave doesn't want to sell….

Wow. And a terrible dentist to boot.

Couldn't find any reference to Skytrex though, fascinating to know how he screwed that up.

ITALWARS14 Jan 2016 8:13 a.m. PST

i would'nt be amazazed if they discover that he also made the metal dental prostheses for his patients out of metal scraps from cutting sprues from the castings of tank and minis

"He also ran businesses including Skytrex Ltd, of Charnwood Business Park, which develops and sells model railways, ships and military vehicles…. Cooper Parry, a firm of accountants and administrator for Skytrex Ltd, told the Echo that Dr Hammond owed a total of between £6.00 GBPm to £8.00 GBPm personally – £4.00 GBPm of which was through his business Skytrex.

Not hard to find the link in a non-media capacity either:

The first directorship we have on file for him was in 1991 at Skytrex Limited

He is still showing as a director of Skytrex Limited: link which seems to have moved to liquidation in 2014.

However this is NOT the same as Skytrex (2013) Limited, which is the current company run by David Bailey.

I just cant get my head round the fact Skytrex had debts of FOUR MILLION POUNDS. How did that happen?

A couple of years ago there was a TV programme about him. Think it was called "send in the bailiffs" or some such. He spent some time racing around in his Jaguar to beat the bailiffs to his surgery and hide in an upstairs room. they did try to coax him out but to no avail.

Contrary to popular belief (or indeed the image they prefer to portray) bailiffs are not allowed to break in. They have to wait for you to open the door, or get a court order and have a police officer present.

It is certainly a lot of moulds :-)

NickNorthStar14 Jan 2016 11:07 a.m. PST

I don't think Skytrex itself had £4.00 GBPM debt, I suspect it's name was attached to his dodgy deals.

Rather depends on what he ordered through the company.

It does say (in several places) that £4.00 GBPm was through the company.

Now that Skytrex is back on its feet I wonder if we'll see any more 1/700 modern coastal models. The promise of new releases was what drove the publication of Bulldogs Away :)

GeoffQRF14 Jan 2016 1:03 p.m. PST

Wasn't there a question whether they got sold/bought?

Mac163818 Jan 2016 3:57 a.m. PST

Big list of stuff Skytrex use to make.
I have a 1/300 Early WW2 German and a WW2 US in Europe,
not bad but starting to show there age.

MajorB18 Jan 2016 6:24 a.m. PST

not bad but starting to show there age.

In what way are they starting to show their age?

Other manufactures have crisper casting, update and back fill their catalog.

I saw that programme, I wondered if it was Mr Skytrex at the time. Now I know.

If that prog is still on YouTube its worth a look.
