Are there any rules that differentiate pilot skill? I want to do some Vietnam era gaming and I am looking for a set of rules that does this. or is it all in the dice and luck for most games?

CY6!JA gives better pilots more movement options, especially when tailing. I think they also get a drm when shooting.

I agree with Sundance, CY6JA has 4 levels of pilot skill and that plays a major roll in the game. I have gamed the Vietnam war a few times with those rules and I really enjoyed the games and thought the outcomes felt right. A Ace in a MIG 21 is a very different creature than a Green pilot.

Also agree that pilot skill is well modeled in CY6. C21 Air War also has differences for skills in that more skilled pilots can pull off better maneuvers.

If they don't have it, you can just add in your own, giving better pilots a greater chance of winning the initiative (usually meaning they'd want to move after their opponent, if firing is simultaneous; but, perhaps before them, if it isn't, and damage results occur immediately), and for a better chance to hit, when firing.

Just out of curiosity, does the Wings At War: Thud Ridge set have pilot skill ratings? I've got a bit of a plan for a smaller jet age project this summer, but I'm caught between Suez and Vietnam.

Not sure, but I'd say C21 is one of the better sets of rules for hexless, modern air combat.

Clash of Sabres is another very good one for the Suez and Vietnam. It's also hexless, and uses curved templates like X-Wing does, for maneuvering (Clash had them first).

I'm aware of C21 being good, although I'm more partial towards the "everything but the kitchen sink", operational-style approach that Wings at War uses.
