So I bought the Team Yankee rules, and find them not quite what I was after, but they have helped me narrow down what I am looking for:
6mm scale
1:1 vehicle (not 1 vehicle=a platoon)
Includes Fast Air as well as helicopters.

Near misses seem to be FFOT & CWC (as they use 1 vehicle=1 platoon),Sabre Squadron which I think only includes Helos, not fast air, and FoF, which I also own, but isn't what I'm after.

Are there any other rules out there that meet my criteria please?

Sabresquadron has fast air in full rules.

Ah good to hear that gunnerphil – is it abstracted, or do you put models on the table? (Preference for figs on board!) I'd assumed it didn't have fast air, as none of the vehicle or force lists I've seen mention jets.

Most of the rules from the 80's should work. Close and Destroy, Total Conflict are a couple we played.

Even WRG rules or Challenger might be worth a look

Yep Sabre Sqn, has fast air, for air support not air to air combat,

Tally Ho

Thanks Nick – have to say that your blog posting was one of the ones that caught my eye! Do you mind sharing which manufacturers produced your figs? There seems to be lots of different opinions on the merits of individual models it seems, making it hard to pin down from whom to buy what (apart from H&R for Helos and Fast Air, being 1/4 the price of GHQ..)

A Fistful of TOWs 3 has rules to play 1:1 scale games. A number of FFT players use these rules and report no problems.

@Eddieasrael
Scotia's models and air are good too. Other than GHQ best air is Raiden from Magister Militum.

H&R form the bulk of mine, nice and a good price. GHQ and CinC are beautiful, slightly larger and expensive! H&R are doing some new stuff (Ian Armstrong the designer was playing the Russians)

Tally Ho!

Challenger

Eddie the rules have on table and off table aircraft. Same with helio. Drones as well

If you have tried the free version then full rules are better and include more.

I always kinda felt FFT worked better in 1-to-1 scale. It comes with stats for approximately 8 billion tank models too.

Heck, we've played Command Decision with 1-to-1 and it worked great too.

My go to rules are Fistful of TOWS 3 and Saber Squadron. Both have fast air. Cold War Commander has fast air as well but plays much differently than either of the previous two.

Thanks all – great feedback. Re the new H&R stuff – is there a list anywhere of what the new items are?

Vigilant13 Jan 2016 2:04 p.m. PST

Challenger if you want to spend hours on each turn working your way through endless charts. Haven't had chance to play Sabres Squadron yet, though I bought it to try this year. Cold War Commander is good at what bit does, but is not 1 to 1.

I used these for Team Yankee in the mid-80s. Free at:

Just love the term Fast Air.

Great link – I played hundreds of hours of 'tank diplomacy' with these rules in the 80s. Wonderful to see them again!

Cheers!

For 1:1 the old WRG 1950 to 85 works fine, or their military equivalents Contact and Dunn Kempf (both republished by the history of wargaming project).

For something a bit more modern then Sabre Squadron looks a good bet, rather than taking a platoon base set and pretending the platoons are individual vehicles. Cold War Commander in particular has such an abstract combat system that it sits very strangely with 1:1 games. Ymmv of course.

As fir using model planes, I always use model aircraft to represent air strikes, regardless of what any rules may or may not say. What is the point of painting them otherwise?

Striker14 Jan 2016 4:43 p.m. PST

I plan on using Mein Panzer for cold war 1980s. I don't recall air but it has a lot of what I like in rules.

williamb15 Jan 2016 7:42 a.m. PST

Some have used Cold War Commandeer at 1:1 instead of the platoon scale of the rules.

Weasel15 Jan 2016 12:43 p.m. PST

For some reason, CWC at 1-to-1 just never clicked for me, even though we did it with both Command Decision and FFT.
