Hello all, Just curious if any one knows if pikes were painted in the 30 years war? I have one book on Saxony that states the militia pikes were painted yellow. Any one have any other sources confirming this or any other colors? Thanks, David |

I've never seen hard evidence for painted pikes during the period. That is other than the use of tar and similar treatments to prevent rot. Cermonial weapons seem to have evidence of being covered with cloth in some cases but even in that group I've not seen a shaft I'd call painted. |

I would imagine that quite a few of them broke in action, so with that and the natural wastage of campaign, would they have lasted long enough to make painting worthwhile? Does anyone have anything on the "lifespan" of a pike? |
