By that I mean, do you have to have everything in a genre or an era? My examples will be mostly Historical after the first choices for space purposes but I am including Fantasy and SF in the question. Must you have every airplane that served in WW2 represented (even if only one miniature ) in your collection? Do you have to have an army (however small) in the Seven Year's War? Do you have to have those Defiants for you Battle of Britain RAF? Or do you limit yourself to some piece of an era/genre? Feel free to add choices. Here is a starter list. A. All, I must have it all whether it saw combat, was deployed or even could have been… For Starguard I must have a full TO&E unit of all the races in the rule book… For Dwarf armies of a particular manufacturer/rule set I must have one of all options in the game…. All of them! For the Battle of Britain I must have all the army liaison aircraft on both sides available.
B. Only one side of a conflict but I must have all their possible forces/vehicles! C. Mainline units of both sides in a war or battle only. The rest is "nice" but not needed for my gaming pleasure. D. Only major units of one side (like RAF Spitfires, Hurricanes but not the Defiants in the Battle of Britain.) E. I build a representative army/navy/air force for the era/genre and let it go at that. F. I just have bits and pieces… G. No opinion/Never thought about that. |

Between C and F, dpending on the game in question. |

Must have a representative of all various uniform types and facing colors because I love to paint all the various uniforms. Not so much interested in every unit but the variety of uniforms and troops that were in involved in the conflict. |

I always do both all/sides, ideally complete units sufficient to do a range of battles at the engagement level I'm interested in. In some cases this may indeed involve painting up the Post Office rifles or whatever, in others it won't. Depends which battles/campaigns I'm doing. Matilda Is are particularly frustrating in this regard as you need lots, to do precisely one battle. If I can't see a realistic possibility of using it a game, I generally won't buy/paint it. I do occasionally design an entire scenario around some particular piece of junk I've bought, although I have yet to find a use for my Karl Morser, apart from as generic 'superheavy artillery'. So something of a mix of A, B and C. Doing only one side is where madness lies though, or at least considerable disappointment when the owner of 'the other side' decides to move house. Yes, I do mean you David. |

Primarily C I like to have some of the special units etc but mostly I have focused on main-line units I find that as my armies get bigger I get more of the specialized units – for example, while I do have the Iron Brigade and Berdan's rifles these are among my 60 plus Union ACW units |

H. I fear I shall never complete the full checklist of DBA armies! |

I reckon I am mostly C, I like to be able to do the scenarios but I donīt need the obscure stuff. Although I do have the Defiants. I mean, they are Defiants, how could you not? |

Unfortunately most definitely A. That's why 80% of my lead is unpainted. 8-( |

I am A for sure. I need both sides and every unit within striking distance of the action. |

When I was a WRG Ancients player, I looked on things like the Seleucid Army list as a shopping list, a cry for completion. Ditto Carthaginians, Indians, Gauls… I like to joke that with my AWI British, there are still 70 regiments I haven't painted yet. But from the very beginning, I have announced "In today's battle, the part of the 2nd Brigade of Guards will be played by the 64th Regiment." Still, if some new company comes out with figures that please me, I can find uses for them. I now have a lot of Fife and Drum militia, the actual 2nd Brigade of Guards, Pulaski's Legion, etc. I have several King's Mountain Continental and Loyalist regiments, and again a lot of militia. One could argue that my AWI armies are "complete", and they are. Until something new and shiny comes along.
So, my Ancients were A, while my AWI is E, but spiking upwards. I suppose my Flames of War "armies" could be B+. Again, this is the "Army list as shopping list" syndrome. I MUST have Jumbos. And Easy 8s. And Pershings. And Challengers. And Cromwells. And 155mm artillery in many nationalities. I draw the line at the new Katyushas. The old ones, of which I have 8, will do quite nicely, thank you very much. |

Don't know what constitutes an era or genre. Depending on that, complete means different things. |

C. I have major elements for NW ETO 1944-45 for Germans & Americans. Definitely have more German rare weapons then American. |

C&E Get a good representative force that can handle most scenarios and then add other stuff as the fancy (or opportunity to acquire it cheap) strikes |

I aspire to A but have only managed to reach C on most of my periods of interest. There's always that extra unit or nationality that I need to add……. |

I use genre for Fantasy, Science Fiction, Pulp, Victorian Science Fiction, Victorian Horror, or some other people will use historical as a genre though I don't. Era is usually a term I use for historical periods like Ancients, Dark Ages, Lace Wars, Napoleonic Wars, World War II, and sometimes smaller slices of arbitrary time. There is bleed over and the War Game Police will not break your door down if you have Goblins or Aliens using Horse and Musket weapons/tactics on the table. |

E I game many genres and eras, so have a multitude of units, some similar in different scales. When I do have a completionist plan, it is for a specific order of battle. |
olicana | 13 Jan 2016 2:29 a.m. PST |
C & E, but that doesn't mean I can't have lots. |
Timmo uk | 13 Jan 2016 12:09 p.m. PST |
C, E and F. Even if I just had one period I'd never be able to do it all. I hit a point where I just feel as if I have enough of something done. After that point I just add odd little bits as I feel like it. |
KSmyth | 13 Jan 2016 3:01 p.m. PST |
Generally C and E. Some of my projects are really big, but not completest big. I usually do both sides in a project because I can trust me not to abandon the project. In a few cases it's also F. |
BW1959 | 15 Jan 2016 7:19 a.m. PST |
I usually do two sides for each period I game. But one army always gets slighted while the other is more complete. So somewhere between A and F. Although I have yet to actually finish an army even tho some are 30 to 40 years old. |
