Yes you definitely could use Impetus-style bases – units are removed rather than figures or constituent bases and there aren't many situations where you would need to represent formations other than 'battle-line'. |

Thanks PM. However, having read up a little I see that the rules include tiny, small, medium and large units like Hail Caesar so I don't think they would work without rebasing after all. Cheers Nick |

Nick, You're right, the unit size is an issue. I competely forgot about that, apologies! That said, I think for many battles you could safely ignore tiny units, then use 1 impetus base to represent a small unit, 2 side-by side to represent a medium unit, and 3 for a large unit (which would probably be relatively rare in most armies). I use a variant of that approach for my 6mm Marian Roman and Gaul/Briton armies, which are based on 20mm squares (1 base for a tiny unit, 3 for a small, 5 for a medium, 7 for large – a roman cohort is small, with the 1st cohort as a medium unit – the gaul unit sizes vary). Of course the feasibility of using multiple Impetus bases per unit depends on how many Impetus bases your collection includes! I don't mean to push the rules on you, I'm just an optimist about the feasibility of adapting between systems! (And I do like the Augustus to Aurelian rules.) |
