SPOILERS, or not, will follow.
so, get your nose out of this if you are easily offended.

As has been apparent for a long time, George r R Martin will miss the latest of many deadlines to get the long awaited Book 6 of his Song of "Ice and Fire "trilogy". Book 7? Maybe sometime in the Chelsea Clinton administration. (( That's a joke! Nothing political! ))

Book 6 will come out after season 6 of the HBO series ends. Unless George is scamming us, of course.

anyway…
The cover of Book 6 shows a horn. It's called The Winds of Winter.
There was all osrts of speculation in the books, but not on the show, about the Horn of Joramum. This is supposed to be a relic fromm the Age of Heroes, and is capable of bringing down The Wall.
but the Wall is also supposed to be magically constructed by Brandon (Stark) the Builder, and will stand "as long as the Watch be True." It occurs to me that assassinating your Lord Commander is kind of the opposite of being True.
Thus, someone, possibly the Night's King, will find the Horn and bring down the Wall.

Jon Snow… is dead. And will stay dead. However, what about Jon Stark? Jon Targaryean? We have a Red Priest(ess) handy, so that's taken care of. "And now his watch is ended." Blah blah blah

Tyrion, Jon and Dany each had their mothers die in giving birth to them. Born in blood. The dragon has three heads. Yadda yadda yadda. Do the math.
Very strong theories imply that Jon is a Targ, Raegar's son.
There are also theories, not quite as strong, that Tyrion is the son of the Mad King.

And finally, most importantly, someone won a charity contest to have Martin kill a character based on that person in a hideous and gruesome way. I predict that will happen.

My predictions are probably worthless.
The main fun in making predictions is that as soon as the book comes out, you will be either praised for prescience, or laughed at as a fool. grin

No. He will dither and flick his handfan coquettishly until he croaks (maybe tomorrow, maybe 30 years from now), and the next sixteen books will be written by his cat (Mayonnaise R S Martin) and Kelvin J. Anderson.

I personally think he already has the series finished, locked away somewhere, maybe in a crate sitting next to that of the Ark of the Covenant. His reasons for his dithering are his own.

Several years ago, I started to read the first one & did not like it.

However, I stumbled across the 3 Dunk & Egg novellas & really liked them: finished them yesterday. I believe Martin has promised more of these too!

Was there a chance of a TV/movie version of them?

I may give the GoT books another chance.

As good a guess as any. It rarely goes the way people predict.

Goonfighter08 Jan 2016 1:16 p.m. PST

Much of the above theories make sense but that's no guarantee of anything. If you knew Tolkien's moral compass, you could possibly have guessed – or at least not have been surprised at – Frodo succumbing to the Ring or Sam's strength of will. GRRM has taken that kind of certainty or value and butchered it in the guise of deconstructing the genre. If any of the "good" characters make it to the end, they will do so with bloody hands and a loss of their relative goodness. That's fine in proportion but the constant tone in the books is alienating me and the glacial pace of publication is a challenge in itself.

I'm quite happy to indulge in idle speculation, watch the series and leave GRRM and his creative angst to rot.

I'm with the naysayers – I don't honestly expect to see book 6 in his lifetime unfortunately.

Winston Smith08 Jan 2016 2:18 p.m. PST

He has said, wistfully, that he has a lot more Dunk and Egg stories sketched out and outlined. Which is author code for "This is what I was doing when I should have been….."
They're probably good for a "hold the fort" season waiting for him to catch up. Which might be a problem actor contract wise.
We'll see Book 6. It's 7 I have no confidence in.

jowady08 Jan 2016 3:52 p.m. PST

I think that GRRM is done with GoT. Not actually as in finished writing but rather that he has no great desire to write it anymore. He is writing this other stuff now and is all excited about it. So, if "Winds of Winter" actually comes out it probably won't be this year either, maybe we'll see it in the middle of 2017, probably around the end of season 7 of the HBO series which will be the end of that. After that I don't know, maybe the final book would come out in 2023? As for what happens along the way will anyone still care?

I think that it's true that Jon Snow is dead, to be replaced by whoever, Jon Dragon, Jon Targaryen, Jon Stark? Dany will probably figure in somehow at the end but is putting House Targaryen, with it's history of insanity, back on the Throne really a good idea?
And I also wonder about this seemingly approaching Apocalypse. Will that really be taken care of in two books, along with all of the political dynastic stuff? I mean are we going to face a situation where all of the humans of Westeros are forced back into a "Pusan perimeter" and then at the last moment saved by some sort of Deus ex Machina or Deus ex Draconis?

Always figured that they would quickly burn Jon's body to hid the fact that he fell multiple times on his dinner knife. Then like Dany he will rise anew from the flames.

Winston Smith08 Jan 2016 6:19 p.m. PST

That's an interesting thought. "Fire cannot harm a true dragon".
And if Jon is the son of Raegar, the Last Dragon, and his body is burned to become Jon Whatever, we won't need Mel anymore. Unless it's for gratuitous nudity, and there's always a need for that.

Winston Smith08 Jan 2016 6:21 p.m. PST

Tolkien is the one who specializes in dei ex machina, but he used Eagles.

That`s only the TV series.
In the books He`s stabbed 3 times by a single individual with a grudge, once in a location that`s superficial and produces a lot of blood once in a place where he`s wearing a lot of furs and leather armour and the third location is unspecified.
Furthermore the stabbing takes place in broad daylight with a lot of friendlies close by.
So he may not even have died, but is just seriously wounded and can recover with just some medical help and not a lot of magical shenanigans.

The Beast Rampant11 Jan 2016 4:14 p.m. PST

Come on, the Red Priestess shows up JUST IN TIME .

This is either:

A) deus ex machina, or-

B) The writers just jerking us around.

Since this is the HBO writers and not Martin, my money's on A.

All the mooney-eyed "Snow just can't be dead!" whiners failed their Perception check, whooda thunk?
