Not certain if this is the right place for this – stumbled across this article whilst looking for something else – I wonder if anyone can comment on it/has an opinion? Not quite my area, but (at first glance), it looks interesting, if perhaps in need of a little proofreading. Abstract: This paper is an in-depth analysis of the battle of Pharsalus and provides an breakdown of both Caesar and Pompey's armies. The size, organisation, frontage and depth of the armies and the legions involved on both sides have been fully investigated. The conclusions and tactics of both Caesar and Pompey as found here contravene conventional thinking about the battle of Pharsalus, yet still closely adhere to the accounts of Appian, Caesar, Cassius Dio, Eutropius, Florus, Orosius and Plutarch. At Pharsalus, it took Caesar's army of 37,000 men less than one hour to defeat Pompey's army of 63,000 men. link Cheers Mark |

A nice example of British and American wargaming fusion! Clarence Harrison of Quindia Studios and myself are building and running the Battle of Pennyburn Mill from the 1689 Siege of Derry for the convention. We hope to run the game many times over the course of the event. Here it is as it begins the construction process.. link more updates as we progress |

Thanks that is very timely- there is a Society of Ancients Battle Day for Pharsalus in April and I am giving the battle some thought this week with a view to drawing up an OOB. |

It's interesting but I don't get the arithmetic. The Ninth Legion is said to have taken heavy losses at Dyrrachium yet by Pharsalus shortly after it was composed of exactly 600 each of hastati, principes and triarii. If it took heavy losses how could it end up with exactly 600 of each troop type? Wouldn't one have likely suffered worse? I also don't get why each cohort is exactly 360 men. |
