"The most expensive series in MTV's history follows the inhabitants of the Four Lands, a place set thousands of years into the future where cataclysmic war among humans has yielded a new order after wiping out most of the humans, leaving various troll, dwarf, elf and other species to battle one another and a set of demonic presences in a place called the Forbidding. The lead characters are Wil Ohmsford (Austin Butler), a healer who suddenly discovers his powers, and Amberle Elessedil (Poppy Drayton), who becomes one of the Chosens (guardians of a mystical tree that provides peace in their lands), and sets on a quest outside her elfin kingdom, where she will meet Wil. They will be joined by outlawed scavenger Eretreia (Ivana Baquero). Daniel Macpherson and John Rhys Davies also star in John Favreau directed and produced series…"

Why are they starting with the Elfstones of Shannara instead of the Sword of Shannara? Granted, the novels were set in different generations, and each novel can stand alone. But Sword of Shannara started the series, and I didn't like the ending in Elfstones.

Mithmee03 Jan 2016 11:32 p.m. PST

Elfstones had a better ending.

The Sword of Shannara has a lousy ending since their is no real enemy.

There isn't a girl in 'Sword' as far as I can remember….

Green Tiger has hit on the reason that I heard as well.

There is a girl in Sword. She doesn't appear till about midway through the novel, but she's prominent and becomes the love interest of one of the heroes. But I guess of you want "girl power" from the beginning, you'd have to skip Sword.

But Sword of Shannara started the series, and I didn't like the ending in Elfstones.

Funny enough, I thought that the Sword was boring. But then again, I didn't think either book was all that outstanding.

This is going to be on MTV? Is it a musical like that drek Pan?

This is a very simple problem to solve. Just ADD a character, or change one of the existing characters. Hollywierd does it all the time.

Sword felt like a scene by scene rip off of Lord of the Rings when I read it 25 or so years ago.

Ravenscraft,
That is exactly what I thought, however I would add 'poorly done' to your comment.

Thanks,

Pat

it was thoroughly reviled by Tolkien-philes when it came out…

Yeah, I thought it was a rip off too.

Must say that the post-apocalypse imagery is very striking.I never picked up on that when I read Swords so long ago. Brooks, to be fair to him, readily acknowledges his Tolkien influences, and the first book does, if I remember it at all , seem like a lift. This drama has perhaps done well to take a later work, which is more of the author's own invention.

Good luck to it.

No girl in a book is no problem for Hollywood.
See what P. Jackson did with the Hobbit.

nsolomon9904 Jan 2016 4:55 p.m. PST

Hmmmm ….. filmed in New Zealand and lots of Aussie accents in that group of principal actors. Wonder when it will get to us in Australia?

Holy crap, I read these when they first came out and I can't remember a thing about them. Time to crack them open again!

Hopefully they do a better job of it than the "Wizards First Rule" TV series. (It wasn't called that, can't remember what they titled it).

I am currently reading "Sword" and while it is tremendously derivative of Tolkien, it isn't awful. I have read far worse in my time. My wife and I watch a lot of "Ridiculousness" on MTV2, and they are running commercials for Shannara every commwrcial break. I could take it or leave it, I am not much for TV, but my wife is really excited about it. She loves fantasy stuff, whether good or bad. She has no idea about the books, and certainly doesn't let differences between book and screen, or original and remake, get in the way of enjoying things on their own merits.

So, yes, we will be watching it.

25? That would only be 1990. 1977. Can I really be that old? old fart and Get Off My Lawn!

Irish Marine05 Jan 2016 12:00 p.m. PST

I really liked most of the books. Brook's first three were his best and as a 10 year old who just slugged through Lord of The Rings these were a much easier read, not better just easier. I'm sure TV will screw them up somehow either adding made up characters or changing the story line, like they did with the Seeker which was suppposed to be book series of the "Wizard's First Rule"

tkdguy06 Jan 2016 12:42 a.m. PST

I actually enjoyed the first three novels. It was only the ending of Elfstones that put me off.

Shannara wasn't as much a ripoff of LOTR as Dennis McKiernan's Iron Tower Trilogy
