I like how non-gaming post about Paraguay gets in 'Wargaming in the USA'. But board quibbling aside – nice find, Vic. Wouldn't have believed it! |

Paraguay certainly has some interesting equipment according to wiki. link Interesting that they have 10 training tanks but apparently only 3 combat tanks (M4s) |

Bolivia has Shermans. They were very cool to see. |

I did a fair amount of research on the armies of South America a number of years ago when I was thinking about a "what if" type of game -- it was amazing how many WWII era AFVs (Shermans, M3 half tracks, M8 armored cars) were still soldiering on. |

If you have a tank and the opposition doesn't any of these will work well. |

unless the opposition has AT weapons I imagine even Russian RPGs would prove a match for an M3 or sherman. |

"If you have a tank and the opposition doesn't any of these will work well." Yes, or even a dump truck covered in concrete. A pick-up or Hummer covered with metal plates. Improvisation works. However, the old light tanks and newer wheeled APCs & Fighting Vehicles probably work reasonably well in the native terrain. |

I imagine even Russian RPGs would prove a match for an M3 or sherman. I don't think that RPG-7 would have any trouble penetrating the frontal armour on Sherman. In close terrain getting close enough to score a hit should not be particularly difficult. However, in the open ground and with sufficient infantry support, the main gun of the Sherman would enjoy quite some range advantage over RPG operator. Proper ATGM on the other hand would be very bad news for a Sherman in the open terrain. Meanwhile in Bongolesia:

Somehow, I don't think that any of these fall under the description, "old tanks never die":

Somewhere I have an old military affirs for civilians magazine from the 80's that did an article on the modernization of IIRC Bolivia's M3 Stuart population. IIRC they mentioned adding more armor, upgrading engines and drvie trains, turrets etc. On variant was used a an artiller missile carrier. The missiles were similar in size to the old US Little John or Honest John type. Quite interesting really. |

Interesting bit of history, but….if you want reliable, cheap tanks I think I'd rather get some surplus late-model Type-88's from China. Refurbishing/maintaining WW2 tanks can't be very cost-effective in the long run. |
