My son-in-law bought me a kepi for Christmas – and it fits…! I'd like to know more about it. It looks french to me and has a grenade badge so I'm assuming a grenadier's hat but from when?

Here's a couple of photos. Any info gratefully accepted:

I have a very similar kepi. I believe they are army surplus foreign legion kepis.

Looks like a Gendarmes Mobile Kepi to me, French Police.

Would they have the grenade badge?

They take policing very seriously in France.

Yep it's french policemans kepi
I can't get the link to come over but if you put French police kepi into google it will give you a lovely selection of pictures of them.

Just had a link on another forum to a "pompier" (fireman) hat on ebay that looks exactly the same…
auction
although it also says "grandames" which I guess in a misspelling of "gendarmes" so maybe not an accurate description…!

LOL, yes I looked on eBay for mine, where it came up as 'Foreign Legion'!

But yes, I found some proper pictures and descriptions and the one with a big gold cross on the top is a Gendarme kepi. Mine is an Army one (with red edging).

Yes, the grenade is the symbol of the national gendarme.
