In an earlier post someone opined that there weren't enough pictures of modern naval games on this board. While I don't have any pics of my ships in action (once the dice start rolling I usually forget, if I even remembered to bring a camera) I thought I'd do my part and show you my 1:2400 Cold War fleet ~1985. Most of these ships I bought and painted back in the 1980's when I was in the (US) Navy. After we played a game of Shipwreck last year (didn't like the rules, liked the era) I started looking around again and found out there were significantly more niches filled from various companies as well as the ones I had bought already from Superior, CnC and (I think) GHQ. BTW, it's mildly disheartening to find my painting quality hasn't gone up in the last 30 years, but I'll have to live with that.

Nice to see the JFK. I served on her for 3 years in the early 80's!

Excellent fleet. How does one play moderns considering most fights are being done by aircraft these days?

dragon6 Supporting Member of TMP02 Jan 2016 12:32 p.m. PST

You fight ships against aircraft of course. It's not all one sided, aircraft attack ships defend. Cruise missile attacks on airfields but it often means the toys come out for actual attack only and the game is carried on paper, movement, weather, detection, organizing the strike, defense, counter, etc

Murvihill02 Jan 2016 7:48 p.m. PST

I didn't like the tactical rules I've played because they ended up being like "Tommy vs the Zulus" (You shoot they move You shoot they move You shoot they move You shoot they move then the last surviving missiles blow the crap out of your fleet), so I made up my own, 10 miles to the inch and a turn is 8 hours. I call them "Meatheads with Missiles", but I'm not done tweaking the the stats as the Russian SAM's are pretty weak. We did play a game where the Soviets put down a US CV, It took a coordinated strike with 26 bombers and 5 submarines for a total of 76 missiles and two successful torpedo attacks.

I think it might have been me who lamented the lack of modern eye candy and my hearty thanks for delivering in spades! That's a beautiful collection.

My own modern project (Operation Earnest Will 1987) has stalled due to not being able to find rules that hit the mark for me, but posts like this rekindle the interest – cheers!

Nick

Bozkashi Jones, have you looked at using Bulldogs Away for Earnest Will? Depending on the units you use it might be a bit of a stretch for these missile boat rules, but stats for ships up to frigate size are included (and you could extrapolate destroyers). If you're not expecting detailed coverage of Aegis systems and such they may be good enough.

gregoryk12 Jan 2016 9:05 a.m. PST

Surface Battlegroup works well for moderns and has ship stats ready to go. It also has the major hot spots of the world covered with scenario books. All of it is available from Wargame Vault.

Cheers,
Gregory

Nice collection! Really like the Subs and MPA.

We did play a game where the Soviets put down a US CV, It took a coordinated strike with 26 bombers and 5 submarines for a total of 76 missiles and two successful torpedo attacks.

Probably a bit low on the ordnance unless there were some nukes in the mix, but sounds about right for the order of magnitude involved.

Murvihill13 Jan 2016 10:57 a.m. PST

Only a few missiles actually hit and he rolled low for damage, but the first capability he killed was the CV's ASW capability and that made it easy meat for two undetected submarines.

Lion in the Stars15 Jan 2016 11:36 a.m. PST

Ouch. Yeah, that'd do it!

austerlitz0627 Jan 2016 10:55 p.m. PST

What a beautifully built collection!! And I'm glad to find that you also combine your 1/2400 ships with 1/700 aircrafts.
Do you have a blog or are there other ways to see your fleets in action?

Murvihill02 Feb 2016 4:47 p.m. PST

Sorry, I only wargame once or twice a month and it's usually someone else's game. I'd be happy to share the rules if anyone is interested, it would be nice to get some other opinions on the ship statistics.
