Greenfield's Garrison was a U.S. company started in the early 1990's. They produced a ship that seems to have been made with a hard pressed foam like material.

I have two of these, and interested in painting them, yet uncertain as to whether or not they'd take a spray primer without ruining them?

Or maybe it is better to just primer and paint them using acrylics?

What advice do folks have on this?

I'd be reluctant to try any solvent-based primers or paints on them, since foam usually doesn't react well to that.

Water-based primers, and paints are probably safer.

I would agree with Mako11 on this one.

I have two of them also and painted them up just with acrylics, using no primer, many years ago. They are still holding the paint well and never had a problem with them.

The ships might be older than what you think. They are made of the high density foam, and should take spray primer without much problem. I still have have better than a half dozen of the ACW ships, and all were based with a spray primer.
It is the same type of foam that the Old Glory big pirate ships are made out of, and is a material used in the model railroad business for mountains and hills terrain.

Styrofoam would dissolve or melt when sprayed with spray paint.

I believe the ships in question are made from urethane foam, and that should not be a problem.

Appreciate the feedback gentlmen, thank you.

Yes, believe these are a "hi-density" foam.

I have 4 of the Old Glory pirate era ships, but they don't seem to be made out of the same material, at least currently, and instead much harder in texture.
