We live on the 17th floor overlooking East River Park (NYC). I was in the shower yesterday morning. My wife walked into the living room and saw a drone hovering over the park at about our altitude, lights blinking and flashing. The operator was in the park below.

That evening I walked by the window and saw a small white drone (no lights) flying low over the park, being chased by a 5 year old girl. I guess folks were flying their Christmas presents. I wonder how many have any notion of airspace constraints and safety. Kids get off my lawn…

I believe ALL drones are supposed to be registered with the FAA:

faa.gov/uas/registration

Since you need to be a US citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident to register your drone I guess illegal aliens and terrorists don't have to. grin.

Here I California, the fire departments post "If you fly, we can't fly" notices, and still jerks send their drones to fires that require air support. I think we need Drone Hunters…

I saw the Japanese police are testing a drone that has a large net hanging below. It is used to catch other drones.

"Drones and You: Your Rights in Drone Warfare" (q.v. "unofficial Letter of Marque")

1) Unless it has received prior permission from you to do so, you may shoot down any drone that is flying within your airspace (personal or property.) Government drones on official business are exempt from this rule.

2) Unmarked drones are fair game. (Government-controlled drones are required to be visibly marked.)

3) Downed drones (and any cargo they carry) are subject to the Salvage Law of Finders Keepers ("possession is 9/10ths".) Amazon and pizza drone delivery please take note.

4) Weapons used to down drones must follow local regulations. Electronic jamming is still subject to FCC rules & regulations.

5) Collateral damage outside your airpace (as defined above) should be avoided, and to which you are still liable should it occur.

Pretty sure this could be expanded upon… ;-)
