Nifty cool! I love the thickness of the walls and being able to see it with the cross-section on the top! |

Saw this in the flesh at this year's Thoroughbred HCon sales booth. Another superb Toby Barrett work of sculpture. B |

To give you an impression of how thick those walls really were, here's an architectural drawing of a converted Martello. The toilets in the bathroom should give you a sense of scale.

Got caught by the lock file….. Notice also that this tower wasn't round. This one was built in 1809 in Scotland, the walls are 8' thick |

If this is meant to be an English one, not only is it the wrong shape in horizontal cross section (as per Ligniere) it is also meant to taper in the vertical direction – the sides shouldn't be parallel. Of course the original Mediterranean ones might be different, I have no info there … |

I'm waaaay behind in my net reading so am just seeing this posting. Thank you for the exposure,,,,,much appreciated. Overall this was one of my few labors of love. I will have to sell beaucoups of these to come anywhere near to breaking even considering the hours of modeling and design in order to mass produce the final master(s). In my research I discovered that there was absolutely no standard design employed in building the scores of real ones in the Med, along the UK coast and the few in Canada. All were seemingly different. Not sure if Dagwood is referring to my model having no taper or the one in Ligniere's posting, but there is a slight taper in mine although the photo angle taken from slightly above doesn't show it,,,,,,, In my study I discovered many actual ones did not have a taper, but I decided to incorporate a slight cone shape one in my master because it just looked cooler. It created many design and building challenges but I muddled thru once committed. Also in my research I spent many enjoyable hours looking at what some present day owners have done to convert existing towers for modern living,,,,,great stuff! I was truly amazed by one owner – I think it was in the Dublin area – whereby he spent thousands of dollars erecting a replica gun mount and gun on the roof which he fires off on a regular basis,,,,,,,bet the neighbor's are thrilled. Toby Barrett Thoroughbred Figures See you at the Williamsburg Muster – God willing and the James River don't rise. |
