I ended my wargaming year with a few friends coming over for a Russo Japanese naval mini campaign. A brief report and some thoughts here: link |

David the Russo-Japanese War is my favorite period of Naval history I think I prefer the Pre-Dreadnought period more than WWI WWII. I took part in a Pre-Dreadnought Naval Campaign several years ago ran by one of my very good friends sadly he passed away this past June. I did however aquire most of his collection of 1/3000th scale ships which included US,France,Germany,Great Britain,Spain,Italy and Austria and these are all painted. It was a pretty good Campaign where I played as the Japanese although we never finished it but it was a great time had by all and we played with your rules David Fire When Ready which we liked a lot. For myself the Russo-Japanese War is a war where I could play either side since I like both the Japanese and Russians and since I have all the ships from both sides in 1/3000th scale mostly WTJ minis. I try and do Naval gaming as much as we can but it all depends on who we can get at times. Michael |

I'd love to see the campaign rules. Are you going to post them anywhere? - Ix |

I might well put them on the NWS website once I'm happy with them. The originals were published in Battlefleet many years ago :) |

Interesting that you're using the old DBN rules. After going through various other rules, adaptions of General Quarters, downloads, and such, I think that the only sets I would think about using for the period are the DBN or RJN rules published in Miniature Wargames, or the DBSA rules Phil Barker produced. Less bookkeeping, and the same result in much less time, and they suit fleet actions. |

@Father Grigori, You reference various campaign rule sets. I know the General Quarters rules are not online, do you have links to any of the others? And what does "DBN" stand for? |

Nice write up David – I reckon the campaign would have got more interesting after all the losses – not having enough resources makes for some tough decisions Nick |

Sorry, DBN is De Bellis Navalis. There were a couple of DBA type spin offs for the period, before Phil Barker produced the DBSA set. I have a General Quarters variant, "Think in Oceans, shoot on sight" that I got off one of the free wargames rules sites. They're ok, but my experience is that you get pretty much the same results with Damn Battleships Again (DBSA) as anything more complex. If you check out the Hong Kong Wargames site, they have some links including a campaign system which I haven't yet tried, but looks good, and some variations on the rules. |
