…in just 12 days. A new record. |

And it hasn't even opened in CHINA yet ! (Jurassic World's impressive speed to $1 USDbillion included China!) |

A remarkable feat even by SW standards. And it hasn't even hit China yet. There's no reason to doubt that it will be the #1 grossing movie of all time when it's done. As of now it only has 'Avatar' and 'Titanic' left to beat. |

Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind is still #1. |

"They" should always adjust for inflation. I have always thought that butts in the seats should always be the determinant. |

Except in 1940 (Gone with the Wind) the U.S. population was 132 million. In 2015 (Star Wars) the population is 320 million. Makes a big difference in the number of butts you can put in seats. |

That is so like you, butting in. No ifs or ands but lots of butts. Kind of bums me out. (I am so punny) |

True, but the flip side of that is that cinema was a more pervasive medium with a lot less competition for people's time than it has now. |

Well keep in mind the original movie played for two years straight and sold something like 200 million tickets at $2.33 USD each. Also there are many more theatre today then 1977. |

And then look at percentage of butts in the seats by population, and Gone WIth The Wind wins by miles! |

Fanboys and their money are easily parted |

True, but when you've pissed off as many of them as Lucas did, you have to do quite a lot right to get them back. Remember sequels almost always gross less than their predecessors, even on the rare occasions when they actually stand up to the original. |

There was also no DVDs or Video On Demand then either. The 2nd run theater was a going concern back then. Even VHS players were not common yet. You wanted to see a movie you had to go see it at a theater. |

In my view, it does not matter which film made more money, they both made a lot. I would ask a simpler question, which story had a deeper cultural impact? I suspect Star Wars wins that one, but cannot say for certain. |
