I have to admit the whole show trial thing has never made real sense to me. If you want the guy dead, have him rubbed out and deny all knowledge of it! It's the Roman way!

It only makes sense at all if it was done by Napoleon to send a message to future assassins and plotters but having the guy killed would have done exactly the same thing once word got round.
