On this date in 1979 Soviet forces poured across the border into Afghanistan. Ultimately the Soviets withdraw after 9 years and sustaining15000 killed. The affects of this war are still being felt today.

Remember it well. I was under training in the RAF at the time and it looked like there was a real possibility of this being the start of something global. As it turns out it was, just not how we thought at the time. A typical case of still fighting the previous war not the one were were facing.
