My Son is home for the holidays and we are doing a bit of gaming. I know the actual battle was not much of a fight, but has anyone done a scenario? Willing to create my own, but if someone has a reference to build from that would be great. Looking to keep it simple using Black Powder and actually play on 26 Dec. Found an OoB, but looking for a better map and possibly some ideas for scenario rules/objectives to make it interesting. Some ideas that come to mind: "Wet Powder"-Americans test/reduces the effect of first fire or cannot fire "Sound the Alarm"-Hessians react earlier "Delayed"-Americans test at a negative to initially come on Thoughts and recommendations are welcome. TIA, Aaron [URL=http://s441.photobucket.com/user/adfilter/media/FB_IMG_1450792288313_zps4k7i7oph.jpg.html]

I'm pretty sure one of the earlier Caliver/"British Grenadier" AWI scenario books has a Trenton scenario, with a good map. I'll look it up when I get home, unless someone beats me to it. |

Hessians should call it a victory if they get a battalion off the table in good order. That means crossing the Assunpink. Of course they should have to assemble before they start moving. Rall assumed no one would be out during the nor-easter the night before. |

I wrote a Trenton game scenario for Miniature Wargames earlier this year. Sorry, I don't recall which issue it was, perhaps June? You can also find a lot of information about the Trenton scenario on my blog: link Also on my blog regarding Trenton: link link link |

Jim, That is excellent and very helpful. Our terrain will not look near a nice, but your setup up will provide an excellent reference. how big was your table so I can figure out scale? Thanks, Aaron |

Won't help for this week, but if you're interested in Trenton, get Washington's Crossing,by David Hackett Fischer.Won the Pulitzer Prize for History,2005. Single best book on AWI I've ever read. Wish he'd do one on a southern campaign. He's 80 now, though,so I don't have high hopes. |

H.V.S., Read it in 2011 shortly after attending a school at FT Dix and visiting the crossing site. Agreed, the Best AWI book I have ever read and one of the best history books period. |

Just remember there is no "von" in Rall. |

Wasn't "really" one in Sternberg, either;he thought it's "noble" cachet would help him in the business. I,on the other hand… BTW I would also recommend another AWI book:Saratoga,by John Luzader (2006). An eye opener. A rehabilitation of Gates. He,like Fischer, does not rely on secondary sources, but spent years tracking down original documents. Also like Fischer,he does a historgrapical study tracing the ways various received ideas about the campaign came down to us,particularly from the partisans of Scuyler,Gates, and Arnold. Not as felicitous a writer as Fischer, but who is? Except Churchill. Oh,and James Robertson (distant relative of mine, ahem). |

I am planning to do this battle next year and I have already started to research the town and such. I am a bit concern as to how to structure the victory conditions. If the Hessians only need to leave the town, what is to prevent them, as soon as they get organized, from simply marching off the battlefield? I can only presume that the American regiments coming from that direction could block them or perhaps the Americans start out already on top of them and one Hessian unit will have to be a rear guard while the rest escape. I was thinking of starting the game after the Hessians are organized and able to face the Americans. Skipping the organizing part and have them all set up for battle. Although the organizing part can be a nail-biter. But it seems a little much for the Hessians to deal with that and being outnumbered. The other idea I had was to have the GM and possibly one other to command the Hessians. Maybe, its just a thought. |

If the Hessians only need to leave the town, what is to prevent them, as soon as they get organized, from simply marching off the battlefield? The Yankees of course. As I recall, Sullivan's job was to dash to the bridge over Assunpink Creek, and Greene's was to block the northern exit at the orchard. The Hessians never really got organized. Until each regiment surrendered, individually, they were reacting to try to cope. Unlike most "massacre" games, the Hessians do stand a chance. That is to abandon all pretense of a fair fight. A run out of town is their only hope. Standing for an honorable fight is a ticket for doom. The Yankee plan should be first and foremost to block the exits. Play with when the alarm sounds and the Hun can react. Yankee propaganda has them losing 3 men in the whole battle. That is obviously a joke. It had to have been much more. The game should be based on strong morale rules. How can each regiment be forced to surrender? How do your rules cover a rout or break with retreat cut off? |

Scenarios like this one can be tricky to get a fun game with. But once I have some Hessians done I am eager to give it a go. That being said the Hessians are a bit of a way off as I have the Kings troops and Rebels to get painted first. |
