I spoke with the tech. He said they had run tests on my machine, and couldn't find anything wrong. Even the "failed" drive was working fine.

He said it might be a RAM problem, and said he would run some tests overnight.

The next day, I spoke to the tech. Eureka! He found a problem: overheating! He showed me how the temperature was running too high at idle, and spiking under simulated load.

So the interior was dusted, and new thermal grease applied. New fan is on order. (Some of the blades on the old fan fell off when it was dusted! So there is some vibration now when the fan is operating.) Temperatures are much improved.

So it looks like things may turn out not so bad after all, and in some ways better (the new solid state drive is a keeper!), but there was some data loss from the old drive. Fortunately, the TMP development directories seem unaffected. grin

Hooray for good news. May the old drive RIP.

Um, you might want to replace that fan, or the vibration will probably trash the motor.

Surprised the tech didn't mention that, but maybe he makes commission off of parts sales.

Bill…Please back up your stuff on A: an external drive and B; a network safe spot such as carbonite, or something…it's not hard…and not expensive.

Next…I think you learned a VERY valuable lesson here about the windows 10 crap….

Now that you know…make use of the knowledge…

OK this may explain why my membership has not been updated.

Telling you: Find a cloud service OR set up something like Owncloud or Bittorrentsync

Synology Raid 1 NAS, swear by it.

I concur with Murphy's blunt assessment of windows 10.

I'm not normally a Windoze fanboy, but I have now upgraded three machines to Win 10 with no problems.

This is just the karmic circling back aftee a couple wrongful DHings :-)

My mom had the same problem, come to think of it. My brother, who makes obscene amounts of money as a high level network security consultant for banks and insurance companies (they actually FLEW him down to New York across the border the day after 911…Citibank got him special permission to fly and to get into the US I guess) told my mother to get a new one; HDD or MB was toast in his expert opinion.

Me, a mere back end developer, told her to dust the machine.

A pound of lint later, and everything was fine!

(Mind you, I had two very large, fur sharing dogs, so I keep a close weather eye out on my CPU temp gauge!)
